Which pubs are your favourite? They don't have to do great beer or food (though it helps) but which pubs in Britain have you been to that have been in fantastic settings?

The Applecross inn has to be my favourite, followed by George III near Dolgellau (both are quite similar I suppose). One beautiful warm spring day I sat outside the Cwellyn Arms staring up at Snowdon, lost track of time!

Over to you, help me plan some journeys

Gah, could go on all day, Mrs Rider and I like country pubs and country pub owners often like us to use the beer garden, owing to Rider Jr.

Top few locals and few further afield

The Harp Inn, Old Radnor, Powys. Top nosh and view across to The Whimble at sunset

The Brewer's Arms, West Malvern (see as far as the Black Mountains and Brecons from the terrace garden) best home made chips at any pub ever

The Chase Inn, Upper Colwall, Herefordshire.

Saracens Head, Symond's Yat East, nr Ross On Wye, right on the River Wye at head of a 12 mile cycle path to Monmouth and back

The Camp Inn, Grimley, Worcs, old school pub on the Severn

The Live and Let Live, Bringsty Common, Worcs

The Bush Inn, Morwenstow (take the footpath to the coast from beer garden).

The Pilchard Inn, Burgh Island, South Hams, surrounded by sea

Kings Arms Llangennith, Gower Peninsula

The Blue Ball, Countisbury, North Devon

+1 for George III, love the Mawddach

Not that far from Applecross, The Plockton Hotel's beer garden is the best place in the world on a sunny day...

The Selbourne Arms is awesome, lovely beer garden for kids, separate beer garden for adults, good beer good food and amazing roads to cycle there on. Other than free beer, can't see how it would get better

Welsh coastal ones do it for me. There are loads.

Ty Coch in Porthdinllaen
Ship Inn, Tresaith

are a couple worth googling

Edit: If someone can recommend some eateries along the Way of the Roses, that'd be handy. Staying in Morecambe, Pateley Bridge and York this week, finish in Brid.

Houns, the brewers is a tied Marston pub but they do have guest beers, often malvern brewery, sometime Wye valley.

The best kept pint of HPA in the county though is further along the hill at the malvern hills hotel. The bar is very comfortable and the terrace is nice too. Worth the ride, as you pass it heading for British camp but it doesn't have much of a view because of its spot.

It's all about the Pig's Nose down those parts! 🙂 Pilchard's for grockles. Grockles with a bit of taste, mind you, but still grockles.

The Brewers have Wye Valley HPA on all the time, and a frequently updated selection of guests. I have to visit regularly in case of Salopian Oracle making an appearance - tried for a bat-signal type setup but they weren't having any of it 🙂

Worcs pubs? How could I forget The Talbot, Knightwick. Top food, home grown veg, local meat etc...home brewed ales, big beer garden right on the Teme, best pork scratchings around, always peaceful even when busy. Splendid.

The Maenllwyd Inn near Caerphilly was beautiful once. I suspect it's garden is still one of the nicest around, with its gorgeous view of the green hills. Owned now, as it is, by Chef & Brewer, however, it is like it had an operation to have its soul removed. The signage is naff, the frosted glass dividers inside look naff, and the big stinkin' posters advertising the meal deals have utterly destroyed it.

If views are what you're after, though, it is still worth going to... unless Chef & Brewer have found a way to convert those into shit too.

Saracen's Head at Symond's Yat.

we stopped in for a pint, ended up camping in the site over the road, getting a bit friendly with the locals and canoeing down the wye - awesome!

ship at low newton is great (and as are others listed by drac - we go up to northumberland coast a fair bit)

ty coch @ morfa nefyn is great too - trying to ride along the rocky beach from our digs wasn't the best idea mind!

I like a beer and burger at the Inn On the Tay at Grandtully[img] [/img]

Also the North Ronaldsay Bird Observatory bar is one of the most perfect places I know
[img] [/img]

Oh and not forgetting The Old Inn at Carbost on Skye. Scenic location, oh yes, and a distillery across the road.

gazc, we often canoe down the Wye to SY for the night, spend a night there getting suitably liquid, then get up and meander down to Monmouth the next day. Great way to spend a weekend!

Another to add to the pot from me -
Tafarn Sinc, Rosebush. An oddity, but worth a trip!
The Quay at Cresselly (Yes, I know the name over the door is the Cresselly Arms, but I've always known it as just The Quay)
The Druidstone. Oh yes!

The Abbey Hotel, set in the grounds of Llanthony Priory. The bar is in the cellar with a vaulted roof but there is nothing better than taking your drinks out in the sun on a warm day and sitting in a quiet corner of the ruins soaking up the atmosphere and the views to the Black Mountains. I am of course biassed as it is my local and only next door and I can drive/ride home across the fields 😀

Some bloomin lovely spots!

Stoner I know the Malvern Hills Hotel well, sadly right on the road so too much noise to enjoy a peaceful pint. I do have a quick one in there but save my drinking until I get to the Morgan (handy as near the train station)

Ah yes, I forgot about the Talbot too. Definitely worthy of being on the list

The Chase Inn is just a mile or so from Malvern Hills Hotel, much nicer IMHO, and fantastic beer garden. Not forgetting the bar billiards if raining...and ... Bathams!!!

Another vote for the Old Forge. One of the finest pints I've ever had at the end point of a brutal 5 day c2c. Even better knowing its a fishing boat back home.

The view down Loch Linnhe from the Onich Hotel takes some beating IMO. We were in Mallaig last Wednesday, taking a day off from watching the SSDT & promised ourselves that next year we'd get the early train from Ft Willy & hop on the fast boat to Inverie, mooch around, beer/lunch & do the same back to Ft Willy.
Can't wait already!

+1for the Badachro Inn. Otter spotting on a sunny evening is always a treat. Full of yachties on a summer weekend though so difficult to get a space
Turks's Head on St.Agnes Isles of Scilly takes some beating on a nice sunny afternoon. Excellent local beer too
The Chase Upper Colwall is within staggering distance of where I live -I have proven this on more than one occasion.
The Hampshire Bowman brings back memories- do they still have the barrels lined up behind the bar?

Sat watching the sunset over Skye, snow on the mountains, listening to Otters play

+1 for The Brewers as well. Used to be my local when I lived in West Malvern. It burnt down in the early 90s and Nigel Kennedy ( he used to live locally, the Elgar connection and all that) played a benefit in the local church. Brix Smith from The Fall was his bird at the time and she turned up and played as well.

A nice little pub with a great view is the Rising Sun up the hill from Lacock. Does good food, great beer from Moles Brewery in Melksham, and the beer garden looks out across to Westbury on the edge of the chalk downland that stretches across Salisbury Plain, and to the south-west as far as the Mendips; you can see the TV transmitter mast above Wells. It's got the wrong name, really, you can't see the rising sun, because there's a big lump of landscape in the way!

Just realised looking back through the lists, Including the Turk's Head I put forward, I have been to 20 of the pub's mentioned. Should I be worried about my drinking?
Admittedly, lots are from the Malvern area where I now live, Southern Hampshire where I grew up and the West coast of Scotland where I go walking each year

Applecross FTW

2300 on an evening in June, day out in the hills with friends, still water with moon reflecting, Skye and a blue horizon fading to black.

The Kames Hotel, Kames, and the Oystercatcher in Otter Ferry, both in Argyll. Both lovely spots right on the water but then the midges will leave you with not-so-lovely spots if you spend too long in the beer garden.

three that I forgot yesterday
The Anchor Inn Kippford, beer is great but the food is a little hit or miss - though it is always busy

The Torridon Inn - beer excellent, food excellent, accom excellent, trails amazing.

I am going to lay my balls on the line with this one - I believe that this is one is a best fit for what Houns asked.

The Glenelg inn - beer is good, food is good, accom good - the location outstanding (and no mobile phone signal!) and the local natural trails are pretty good though I need to do some further exploring.

The Free Trade in Newcastle has the best view of the bridges and the Tyne

Another favourite beer garden is the Beamish Mary in No Place, you can see St James's Park and the Birtley Angel from the top.

Wish I was there right now.

We spent a few days in Bathampton recently & thoroughly enjoyed the Bathampton Mill, which I think has just been refurbished following the floods. Had a nice garden & outdoor area overlooking the River Avon & the old bridge

The Anglers in Walton on Thames - literally right on the river. Last time I was sat outside a chap drew alongside in his boat, passed me a rope and asked me to hold on to it whilst he got out.

The Fighting Cocks in Horton Kirby is great for a post ride beer/nosh and you can lie on the riverbank dangling your toes in to cool down 🙂
