On my way to Croft BSB meeting on Sunday, saw two bikes pulled up on the A1 near Darlington by an unmarked '06 plate silver 3-series BMW with a GB sticker on the back. How sneaky is that?

You're surprised that the police have unmarked cars? Or you think that a GB sticker means there's no way a car can be a police car?

I hear some shops employ staff who don't wear the company uniform or any form of visible Id to catch shoplifters.

How sneaky is that?

in reading (thames valley police i think) i'm wary of every car.... initially it was just new black/silver cars with whatever the most recent and new registration was (09/59 etc) but they're using a HUGE variety of vehicles, seen a few rude-boys being pulled over by unmarked police in cars with bodykits and so on (high spec golfs).

i find i get tailed by them a lot, i'm a young looking 25yr old driving a skoda with a national trust sticker and during the day if im driving i've usually got an anxious looking person in the car with me, all whilst driving at the speed limit and not 1mph over.... suspicious mix and i dont mind being followed.

after they check the details and realise i'm insured/mot/tax blah blah... they back off and follow someone else.

wish they'd follow some of the idiots on the roads instead of me escorting a already anxious/paranoid psych patient who's also noticed the suspicious black car and driving talking into walkie-talkies on their shoulders.

(the national trust sticker was from the previous owner... left in in the car to annoy the clunge)

I saw a fairly ordinary looking car, don't remember what, pull over a right cocky tw*t in a repmobile on the A417 in Herefordshire - a bit of road absolutely terrible for serious arsehole driving - I'm talking one serious crash every few weeks. He was trying to argue with the copper. I almost cheered (I was on my bike).

PSA:

How about not driving like a total small * you are?

Then you won't have to worry about the Police or miffing off other drivers because you drive like a total *!

😆

It was the GB sticker that I thought was sneaky, not the car. I've seen all sorts of unmarked cop cars over the years but i always thought that you could recognise them because they had no supplying dealer stickers etc and usually extra aerials and possibly a video camera inside the windscreen.

the police in Kent have 3 x left hand drive volvo estates registered on French number plates.

EDIT. John beat me to it.

Having an unmarked car German plates and a D sticker would be sneaky. The easiest way to spot the unmarked cars is the lights behind the grill and in the back windows...oh, and the police officer behind the wheel.

Yep, I always assume a GB sticker or tow bar means it can't be a police car....

Hey - I had a National Trust sticker in our car when I was 24 - what's wrong with that?

On the original subject, Edinburgh has, or had, a black unmarked Audi TT, which must be quite fun - 'Police Hairdressers coming through!'

Why not just stick to the speed limits and not drive like a cock?

Rond my way it's possible to buy lists of most of the current known unmarked cars from scrotey types. Reg numbers and descriptions. I understand this is a bit of a roaring trade. Apparently very popular with owners of very expensive cars who work in Docklands.

my dad used to do a lot of motorway miles back in the late 80's early 90's in a white granada. Only thing was he was usually wearing a white shirt and dark tie and had an extra ariel as he was an early convert to the "car phone". people would always slow down and get out of his way. On the other hand, I occasionally drive an unmarked car with a blue light strapped to the roof, and that can be fun too!

Is it true that there has to be one officer in uniform for an unmarked car to pull you over? if so it makes them fairly easy to spot!

Best unmarked I ever saw was a 911 turbo in some rich enclave in Florida. Apparently it was bought to chase speeders but never got used as that.

As you bomb past at 90 then slam the brakes on! 😉

I got pulled over a couple of months ago by a marked car but it was obviously some crackdown they were having, loads of marked and unmarked cars along about a 20 mile stretch of motorway.

Surely not? I'd thought there'd have been safety and driver visibility issues attached to lhd vehicles potentially driven at high speeds and that there would have been issues with vehicles on foreign plates 'living' in this country. Not least with insurance.

Durham Police used to have a couple of Metro GTAs that worked the A1 in late 80s.

The Edinburgh TT was a seized criminal asset I think. haven't seen it for a while.

I've seen that 3 series before on Darlintgon ring road. I wouldn't have given it a second glance were it not for the additional rear view mirror!

The Italians do it in style though

an oldish story but apt

Nothing wrong with National Trust stickers in the back of your car!

I'm 30 and have been a member since I was 22, the main reason being that they have some excellent free parking in a variety of prime surf spots, Woolacombe being one example.

Recently bought a (not ex-police) Skoda Octavia vRS - loads of them on ebay that have been used as both marked and unmarked cars.

I still love the irony of the police using fast Skodas. 😀

(or maybe it's just me)

I agree OK to be in NT and you cannot really be annoyed that they do this. What next?Cross becausee they hid from view to catch a thief?

Woolacombe, a prime surf spot... hmmm... 😉

It is a major plus though - Godrevy is the same. Wife's uncle is head gardener at a big NT house down these ere parts - you get a hell of a nice gaff as part of the job!

They go on abotu this "amazing black skoda" when in reality therse also a blue one. Theres a BMW 2 door aswell and something else i forget about.

Bodykitted golfs though sounds excellent !

Stw is really full of the best, law abiding and most courteous drivers in the world. You know the ones, never sped, parked illegally, upset anyone with a sneaky lane change etc etc. The minute you post anything like the op, out with the flame thrower to torch the "cock/prick" of a driver!!!

I have hardly ever noticed an unmarked police car, what am I doing wrong.

I did once see three blacked out range rovers on the M4 with blue lights in the front grill bombing down the outside lane at 90 plus with a Bentley tailgatting them and flashing his lights to get past, he was pulled over later by a normal police car, which made me chuckle. Turned out on watching the local news it was Princess Ann who was late to a hospital openning.

If they got caught then they clearly weren't fast enough!

Nice to see the cops using 06 cars. I was under the impression they only used brand new ones... When the Raoul Moat thing went off it looked like a German car showroom on the telly.

There are loads of different unmarked cars used, obviously the point is joe public doesn't spot it otherwise they will be pointless! to pull over a vehicle it has to be a constable in uniform. I think you will find most unmarked cars are driven by uniform officers.

A black BMW pulled me over after I overtook a Transit at 78mph on the A420 to Bristol one evening. Noticed the car behind, but was more intent on what was in front. The driver had full body armour on, and wouldn't have been noticable as a cop from outside. I think the car was an M3, seen it around several times, usually with a car or bike pulled up in front. I think our local lot had a Volvo 850 T5 at one point. Nice.

Cops must surely squabble over who gets the decent motors? Or is it some kind of rank thing - the alpha dog gets the nice Beemer etc?

Turned out on watching the local news it was Princess Ann who was late to a hospital openning.

Can you give Royals speeding tickets?

Used to have a black Vectra estate with a dog cage in the back and the number of people who used to slow down thinking I was the polis was amazing.

Still using a 54 plate Burgundy Volvo estate round here but have a few silver Mondeos too.

Having been caught by an unmarked Mecerdes C class on the m74 many years ago I now drive slower and it is amazing how many are out there if you are watching for them.

Only distingushing feature for traffic cars are they are usually shiny clean. For the cid they can use anything.

Whenever I see police driving vehicles at high speeds they always seem to be on the right hand side of the road. So lhd vehicles would appear to make perfect sense.
