I don't suppose it's going to be the best quality, but surely worth a punt at £25! 😯

Its a shame they dont tell you the filling rate my North face is 700 and that is warm in most situations. This could be good to pack into a bag for standing around on hills whilst punctures get fixed in the winter though

Someone on UKC has weighed it and it's around 320g (which is about the same as similar jackets from more expensive/reputable manufacturers).

This would perhaps suggest that it has the same weight of filling but of a lower quality down (assuming the lining is not unusually thick)?

*awaits Stoner's verdict*

🙂

It looks almost too good to be true!?

Anybody got an idea of how the sizing for Karrimor relates to other manufacturers?

roight,

am sitting in the harp at st martins in the fields with a pint of hophead and a beef sausage. 🙂

the down pockets are thin, stitch through. not box. 90 % down, 10% polyester. unlikely to be any more than 400 fill.

really only for adding warmth to a shell. not really going to be up to much in its own.

got a size 12 gilet for Mrs s, I didn't bother with one for me as I layer with 200g fleece.

worth #18 for the gilet if you have a use for it.

for more substantial I think Cotswold had some proper ones in sale last time I looked. I will replace my alpkit with another one though

You get what you pay for. It's listed as duck down. Good quality down gear uses goose down.

Mixed opinions on them at http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/gear/karrimor-down-jacket/40188.html

stoner can you please check out the Karrimor Precipice softshell 😛

Finish your pint first of course!

(only kidding).

EDIT SportsDirect seem to do them (and have an identical website to Field and Trek) so I'll have a look at my local one later.

ps 10 mins in the dryer with some tennis balls might fluff it up a bit. but otherwise its quite flat. certainly not like rab style stuffed tubes

sportsdirect = field & trek

I think its the berghaus ones I saw for 80 ish, but decided for the same price I'd stick to alpkit

I got the Berghaus one for 80 and am very happy with it. Tempted in the Karrimor for when the Berghaus is overkill.

I bought one of the goose down Karrimor jackets last year for £50. Apart from a flimsy-looking zip (still working though) it's been superb. Vey light, no down leakage, even sheds light rain. However, I notice that vthe new ones are duck down, supposedly not as good.

sportsdirect = field & trek

from reading the thread linked, and taking the posts in it as anything like authoritative, Karrimor went bust several years ago, Sports Direct bought it, Field and Trek is SD's outdoor division. Trading on the reputation of the name and selling generally lower quality kit, take RRPs with a pinch of salt theres a hint of the DFS sale about them.

Still probably worth it at £18 though, I am thinking of adding to not deleting my basket 😆

I've recently taken to wearing waterproof trousers for riding given the diabolical weather. These could be a bargain for that... Just hose yourself down with the bike, job done.

That Nike could be a bargain 800 fill for that price is well cheap assuming its constructed properly

Ha! I'd started a Karrimor thread as I fancied one of these. I'll be interested to hear what folks think.

I have some Karrimor boots.

They were marked "waterproof".

I get wet feet walking through damp grass.

I now wish I'd spent the extra on some goretex Meindls.

@Jimmy - I like how those waterproof trousers are advertised with 'elasticated waistband for a comfort fit' - should be spot on for the STW cake posse!

Well ordered 4 gilets, hopefully will do the job as cheap and cheerful layering, and be better than the Dare2B tat a previous PSA generated!

They have a heavier weight down gillet available for £40 on the website, i've ordered one of those along with a furnace soft shell jacket, it seems a bargain but we'll have to see what the quality is like when they get delivered.

OK, mine has been delivered. Just to add to what Stoner has already said, the fill is 90% Duck Down 10% Duck Feathers, no fill number quoted / claimed anywhere. Weight is 302g (Men's L), or 315g with stuffsac. Build quality seems to be OK, but I guess time will tell! I've never had a down jacket before, so I'll be interested to see how it performs as an emergency / lunch stop throw-on compared to my usual Berghaus Infinity or Paramo Torres synthetics.

On a similar theme, although not so cheap: Gaynors of Ambleside have North Face Nuptse down jackets and gilets down to £99 and £69 respectively.

Got mine, and my gilet. Exactly as I expected, nice light weight, wore the gilet under a waterproof jacket this morning while standing around teaching - toasty!!!
How can you go wrong for £25?

Indeed, even though it seems you could spit through the fabric, its freakishly warm.
Ive got loads of fancy dan expensive down kit, but Im really happy with my jacket. I can see it being employed frequently in the coming months.

I cant help but feel smug when I think of those who have bought a Rapha transfer jacket for £190, ouch, gives me a warm glow that, in my £25 down filled cheapo.

I thought down lost it's thermal qualities when it gets wet? Are you all buying this kit as layering under waterproofs?
