Go on, roll out the gingham and treat yourself, even if you do it in the wrong order

Marmelade not jam.

It’s all about the clotted cream. Thin smattering of jam first and about half an inch of clotted cream on top. Don’t be fobbed off with whipped cream. A cream tea is a treat and jam just isn’t special enough to out shine the clotted cream.

Thunder and lightning on toast?

(dairy-free version)

The cream:

1 part coconut cream (the hard white cream from top of tin)
1 part Pure (brand) sunflower spread (or Pure dairyfree buttery spread)

Whip together. Sweeten to taste with icing sugar, honey or stevia. Whip some more. I used runny honey.

Works a treat. On toast or soft bread. Spread thick with the cream then strawberry jam or golden syrup on top. Yes on top.

I probably broke all the rules! (by necessity not design) but it tasted ace.

That explains why I woke up late this morning to find a tray of warm scones in the kitchen.

I only had one, they were the size of house bricks.

Butter then jam.

Shame my friend Caron won’t be able to take advantage of it; her hotel/restaurant/tea room near Castle Combe is closed, so she’s been missing out on a huge amount of her income during one of the best spring and early summers we’ve had in ages, especially as she gets a lot of Japanese customers, due to her house and car featuring in an animé.
And it’s jam first, that’s the proper base for a big dollop of fresh cream piled on top.

Jam first.

But the test is that if you don’t feel sick afterwards it’s not a proper cream tea.

Today's the day! I'm sadly unprepared so will nip out to get some cream and jam - or should that be jam and cream?

Butter first.

exactly. All this cream first jam first nonsense just highlights that most people don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Slice, salty, no spreading. Jam, cheese, nothing are all acceptable toppings once the butter is laid.

Cream is for Profiteroles which are dessert.

No but I'd put jam on top of the butter, same as I do on scones - only then just add a blob of clotted cream on top, anything else is illogical or came from centuries of deep South West inbreeding :p

Clearly, any other way is just weird.

Butter, jam, cream. None of which will help my Ard Rock training (which has yet to commence 😳)

Cream first. No Butter. And I'm from Devon.

For a nice twist, use thick white bread instead of scones, I like a cream tea sandwich after a decent ride. You can eat it cream or jam side up 😀

Or for more weirdness, cheese scone, cream (or goats) cheese and chilli jam. Jam always on the top.

Let's be honest, a cherry scone with strawberry jam or a walnut and apple scone with damson beats a cream tea anyday...
