One of the things that amazed me was when the commentary said that they have to do a 'hot' landing in Afghanistan. C17 Globemaster drops 30,000 feet in 90 seconds to land on the runway,& to put it in perspective,it would take a passenger jet 30 minutes to do the same.

A friend who is still serving was saying that the Rifles Regiment has so many guys in Selly Oak hospital the Army is now hiring houses in and around the hospital to house all the famillies who have guys in there. Some 40 seriously injured by all accounts.
Was GB watching, i doubt it i really do, he is just doing all he can to get another term in Government.

While anyone getting seriously injured is obviously horrible for them and their families, 40 doesn't really sound like a whole lot. This is a war after all.
I wonder how many Afghans we have seriously injured, and what kind of treatment they are getting?

Outstanding programme, the skills of all involved, aircrew, medical crew was amazing. Nursing a sick patient in an ITU is scary enough, yet that consultant aneasthetist changed an arterial line mid-air - quality.
Also highlights the numbers of inujured coming out of Afghanistan that don't often get mentioned, and means that for some families they will get one last chance to see their loved ones.
A friend who has armed forces connections told me a few weeks ago that Hedley Court, the specialist rehab centre, is currently full due to the numbers of limb injuries coming through.
missingfrontlobe you are correct about the fact Hedlley is full, a fine establishment and put me back on the road to recovery thankfully i did not have the injuries most of the troops have there now, the MOD wants to extend the facillity there but local objections are preventing any current plans. !!!
In the 80s it was not uncommon to see professional soccer players having treatment there, paid for of course, but as far as rehab goes it is the dogs gonads.
grum - 40 seriously injured, most are treated in country and returned to duty,they do not appear in records published here, the lads coming back are in rag order, and yes a lot of Afgans have been killed and maimed but the fact is if we are not there they would have brought that conflict to our doorstep but thats another debate and hijacks this thread which is celebrating a sucess in regards to Military medicine.
Being in the back of one of those, or a C130 doing the same drop, is pretty insane scary really. Don't half touch down with a bump.
The policy is not to publish casualty figures but it's pretty common knowledge that for every fatality there will be at least 4-5 injuries.
The Rifles have taking a beating - their 2nd Battalion over last summer and now 3rd Battalion over winter. Both are very near being combat ineffective for the next couple of years while they recuperate to full strength.
