Is there any difference between my 40Gb PS3 bought way back when GTA4 came out and the new 160Gb slim that my mate is selling, besides the physical size and HD size?

Assuming you have the fatter, glossy finished one, there are a few differences.

There is no PS2 compatibility in the new "slim" version.
The HDMI chip is different, so can stream different types of audio if you have a suitable AV receiver.
The slim uses less power, and doesn't get as hot, so shouldn't be as susceptible to the YLOD that the older "fat" models experienced.
There are less USB ports and no media (SD/CF etc) ports.

That's pretty much about it.

Or with the 40Gb version IIRC

They still seem to break mate has had 2 now in a short period.

Having less USB ports is not really an issue, as is having no SD/CF reader and HD is incredibly easy to replace I now have a 500Gb PS3. And who want's to play PS2 games?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

BRAVIA Sync XMB control (CEC)
Slimmer form factor
Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreaming[4]
DualShock 3 controller
No LINUX support

so apart from controller type nothing you would really notice unless you have posh telly and fancy soundsystem or that hasnt been addressed by system updates to yours anyway
If you just want a bigger HDD its apparently really easy to fit a new one and transfer data across

Its not worth changing it for the slim version, if that's the question you are asking molgrips?

As mentioned above Sony make it very easy for you to upgrade the HD if thats the main reason you want to swap.

I think the new slim ones might have a quieter fan (could be wrong here - please correct me if so) so if you find yours noisy for blu-ray movies thats worth keeping in mind too.

A side point and slight hi-jack!
Sony PS customer service is excellent I will say, so don't overly panic if it goes wrong.

Mine (120GB Slim) had a minor problem that it wouldn't fully boot up when turned on from cold. Turn it off, back on again and it was fine.

Phone the support line, went through a few things, PS3 out of warrenty and they said no problem. This was 5pm and I had a replacement one (reconditioned one but looked new) with 3 months warrenty the NEXT day and the courier took my old one way.

Better than the 2-3 week turn around from the red ring of death that I had twice on my Xbox 360.

Oh and I got mine free with a phone contract from CPW and that wasn't an issue either.

The slim draws less power and is also cooler (so fans come on less often). Something like 30% less power so if you use it a lot, also means you can put in a faster HD without worrying about it overheating as much. A faster HD results in minisculely quicker loading times for stuff though.

The slim uses less power, and doesn't get as hot, so shouldn't be as susceptible to the YLOD that the older "fat" models experienced.

YLOD is directly related to some hardware in the older PS2 compatible "software only" PS3's.

As you have the 40gb which cannot play ps2 games the only advantage you are going to see would be quieter and drawing less power from the slim. Unless the slim is very cheap I wouldn't bother upgrading, just wait until yours dies. Swopping out the HD is very easy (just be wary of the very soft screws holding the HD in the cage) and although I upgraded a long time ago to 320 I'm still no-where near capacity even with stuff like gt5 and valkeryrie chronicles loaded on there.

As for playing ps2 games... well I still play quite a few (GT4 until 5 came out) and I prefer just the one console under the telly.

Well.. sort of.. my mate's selling one, my PS3 is at home, would be easier.. and somehow I felt like I wanted to buy it... but if they really are the same inside then there's really no point.

It was just the original 60gig that played PS2 games I believe and I was told they fetch good money on Ebay.

I hate mine though - I would happily swap it for a slimline one as I never play PS2 games on it and the fan noise really annoys me especially when watching films.
