Whats the deal with these? I was thinking of buying a good pre owned handheld with a few games for my lad for xmas. Now im reading you can't play the games and earn trophies if the game has been used by someone else? Im all abit new to the Sony so any advice greatly recieved before I dive in.

He'll be able to play the games, but he won't be able to earn trophies, and online functionality is also likely to be unavailable (although some publishers like EA allow players to purchase online passes for access online functionality in preowned games.
You can get trophy functionality back by formatting the saves though:
