Evening All- a quick question for you. How can I stop people just taking and using my photos on Flikr and Facebook as their own?
You can't. Just plaster your pics with a semi-opaque watermark. I only get shirty if I see my pics being used comercially.
don't put them on the internet
As above, you can't. Low res files and watermarks and even that isn't going to stop them.
Lets see some then to see why folk are nicking them...
Like don simon says, a watermark isn't going to stop them - but it's probably the best you can do. If you stick a little bit of text on the bottom saying it's "(c) Ambrose" it'll just get cropped off.
Watermark them, them threaten legal action when they get reused.
Don't want to do that? Don't put them on the internet. Or do what places like DeviantArt do, and only put low-res versions up.
I see a few of mine all over the place (without anyone asking me).
This one crops up a lot:

Unfortunately the determined thief will always get what they want, and it probably isn't worth chasing them through the courts.

Reduced resolution and then blown up to fit the blog, can you see the pixels yet? This is what the folks are prepared to do, if you look at his blog you'll see that he's a serial photo stealer and there is little that you can do. 😥
Not actually for my photos, but an ex-pupil is getting pretty annoyed with people nicking her work. I suggested a watermark, didn't think about low-res stuff. Many thanks folks, Ambrose
I've always been flattered to see any of my shots being used.
Can't imagine why anyone would feel any differently unless there was money being made on the back of it.

I've had pics of mine used without my consent. As you say, it's flattering. But even if money's not involved, it's courtesy to ask someone first.
Stuff on the internet; you basically give anyone carte blanche to use/link to your pic really. The only problem is if they try to claim it's their pic. Hence using a watermark/low res image.
a BIG watermark across the middle of the photo is the only sure way to stop someone using a photo without due credit to the photographer.
as an example, i used to photograph the local football team and make a selection of photos available online at low-res for the sports editor to view. if the editor liked any they would pay be a small fee for a high-res images. this arrangement had worked many times. imagine my surprise when i picked up the newspaper to see two of my photos on the back page!!! the newspaper received a rather large invoice!
