We will be in touch
This is new to me and I need some help, and I'm being serious too.
I've got a student who has a stammer/stutter and normally it's not an issue. Today he had a major problem and couldn't get the "M" of Monday out and it was clearly a problem, normally I just let him finish and there is no problem (I guess).
This is the first time I have met anyone in the classroom with such a problem and I realised I don't know how to deal with it. I simply don't have any experience. We are talking about adults learning English, so not a child issue.
I have in mind that I will talk to him and ask his advice, but maybe that's the wrong approach.
Open to those who know and have experience, should I...
Take control and say the word, which he was clearly having difficulties with, to draw attention away?
Let him struggle to finish?
If you want to send mail, aging bull 2005 @ yahoo . co . uk , obviously without the spaces. 😉
Thanks.
Talk to him about it. He is the expert on his stammer.
theres not much to add to TJ there
Soooooo tempted to tell the bible salesman joke but in this case, I won't.
Otherwise, what TJ says...it's strange though isn't it....how uncomfortable it makes us feel when we know the word that the person's trying to say and he or she can't get it out. I wonder what causes that feeling of discomfort, but it's like no other feeling (as far as I can think off hand). Shows how shit we are as a race sometimes.

I disagree. I think it shows how developed we are that we consciously/sub consciously care so much about doing the right thing around other people.
It's interesting, stammerers used to be quite common when I was at school (30 years or so ago), several of my school mates stammered, but I hardly ever meet one these days. I wonder what has changed in speech therapy in the last few decades?
Do not begin the conversation with "So, that Gareth Gates......" 😀
How about the joke that ends with the line "My name's Paddy, and I'm from London... D-d-d-d-derry"?
My Aunt has a very bad stammer, and whilst some stammerers are a bit arsey about people finishing their sentences, she would rather people did as in her words, "If they didin't, we'd be there all f-f-f-f-f-f-f day."
I disagree.
Yes, of course we care, but we're not developed enough to know what to do about it.

The main difference is that nowadays, they don't force left handed children to write right-handed, which was a major cause of stammering.
Ai speak to them about it, the worst thing for them is if you make it an issue. 'Spose it's important for them to be calm and relaxed and not fear trying to speak out loud

Was it really? Not doubting you, but that's really interesting if it's true.

so you think there's one answer for all occasions?
what about Shibbolleth's aunt f'rinstance?
so you think there's one answer for all occasions?
No, where did I say that?
Darcy, that was the reason for my Aunt's stammer.
I think the solution will vary from one person to another. If the OP feels he can broach the subject tactfully, then a quiet word might be in order. You never know though, this person may never have sought help or talked about his stammer before, so it might be an idea to research the subject and arm yourself with some pamphlets...
Or anything else you can use to protect your suit when he starts trying to spit insults and accusations of victimisation and bullying. ;o)
dd - what I mean is that since there is no right answer (it is dependant upon the individual and the circumstances) rather than go blundering in with one solution or another, we are as a race not so shit and actually consider the feelings of the stammerer until we tie our selves up in polite knots. I never said we didnt know what to do, just not when to do it.

that is interesting , my brother in law who I've also been mates with since 9 years old (my little sister always had a crush) is a left hooker and also stammers , I wonder if being forced to use his right hand as an infant could be the cause?
Just bringing a serious note to the proceedings. There used to be a serious shortage of Speech Therapists in my area and thus waiting lists were incredibly long.
Of course it may have developed in adulthood, rather than childhood.
Sorry, not being much help, but my son did struggle with speech as a child. It was extremely frustrating for him.

That's my attitude, he knows he's got it, I know he's got it, so nothing to hide and nothing to worry about.
Worth get assistance from those with more experience. 😀

I think we're probably broadly in agreement about the topic TBH. More interested in staying OT - I'm going to have to figure out what you mean by that quote though - it has me thoroughly flummoxed 🙂

I'm not surprised. It was a bank holiday yesterday so it's Tuesday today. You got it wrong and he was embarrassed to tell you.
There's a chap by us owns a windsurf shop and his stammer always comes back when he's trying to negotiate. Not a good poker player, I guess.
More interested in staying OT -
As you were, I can pick out the good stuff. 😆
