Advice sought for where stuff's hidden that I need to delete.

I know where the firefox password file is.

Any other gems ? It's been used for our life for 3 years.

Thanks

I should be able to get at everything - the problem is that it runs for a couple of hours then just drops. So, I'll be taking to to the 'genius bar'...

Thanks, gobuchul. Hoping not to need to erase the disc as I hope to be able to leave apps and utilities on to save time when it's fixed...or am I being naive and should erase ?

perchy, my wife's the main user, there may be ridiculous quantities of shoe images...hopefully nothing worse.

What needs repairing? Can you not just take the HDD out and keep it at home? They should be able to boot it with a spare if they need to do that.

If you do need to kill the disk, 'shred' should work (if you have Mac Ports installed), as should 'dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/disk1' from the command line/terminal.

Leave a fair bit of time for the two to work.

willard, taking a modern imac apart is beyond me. Sadly, it ain't like an old PC. I'm hoping it's the power supply. If I could get it apart to get at the hard drive I'd do the psu at the same time...

"Can you not just take the HDD out and keep it at home"

No is the simple answer .

On the smaller ones you can't even access the RAM . The newer ones are glued together and are a nightmare to get inside . At least on the 27" version the user can access and change/upgrade the RAM

Back it up and then back it up again .

Have you a spare hard disk? Clone the original to the spare and then erase the iMac disk. You can then clone the mess back in when it all returns from repair.
