Evening STW.
I have been told that any vehicle made prior to 2001 doesn't need rear seatbelts. Obviously very useful in motor homes or campervans.
However what are the rules if you purchase a pre 2001 vehicle without rear seats, and then added them? What are the restrictions then?
Thanks all,
J
Seatbelts are the least of your worries...suspect any mods will need inspection, engineering paperwork and money.
And a van before 2001 will be rusty as hell.
See the self build van club for advice.
Seatbelts on sideways seats are not recommended.
If you have forward facing seats then you can probably get them ripped out and replaced with a seat with a proper frame, just need the floor to be in good condition and maybe some extra metal work welded under there. It will be a bit pricey though.
The new installation would just need to satisfy an MOT tester each year, so visual check. I put seats in the back of my panel van and they were happy. And update V5 with number of traveling seats, and therefore insurance will need to be told additional traveling seats fitting...unless it already says 4 or 6 as seatbelts not needed before 2001?
Simplifys the build in what way ?
Simplifys any rear passengers being maimed if you crash?
Also you may find added insurance complications once you tell them you have no seat belts on a passenger seat. I know many companies won't touch landies with no passenger seat belts
