No justification needed. If you had to name your three favourite films, what would they be? For me:

1: Fight Club
2: City of God
3: Goodfellas

Three is difficult. Top five? Ask me tomorrow, I might give a different answer.

Escape From New York
Aliens
The Princess Bride
The Terminator
Highlander

I class a 'favourite film' as any film I'd be happy to watch anytime anyone suggested "hey, do you fancy watching...?", even if I'd just watched it. All of those tick that box, and probably a good deal of others besides.

Really happy to see Aliens getting such a lot of votes.

I'd totally agree with this as definition of your 'favorites', and would happily watch those films again & again... and have done.

I want fight club to get a lot more. It's not about fighting and it's actually a very clever film, something that is missed by a lot of people because they focus on the fighting.

I'll add gladiator, blackhawk down and full metal jacket, maybe braveheart and platoon to my ever expanding list. Oooh bad taste and all the evil dead films, GROOVY!

It's badly named. I didn't watch it for ages because I "wasn't interested in a film about boxing" and I know plenty of people who've never seen it, and won't, for similar reasons.

cougar - with memento, try watching it thinking: black and white scenes are in correct order, any scenes shot in colours are moving backwards 🙂

it'd be impossible to pick 3 films, do i pick 3 enjoyable silly films, or 3 films that thrill, or 3 films that make tears roll down my face? do i pick 3 films with ray winston in, 3 with forest whatshisface in, or 3 with complete unknowns? 3 love stories, 3 epic adventures or 3 psychological mindbenders? or 3 completely niche films for the sake of appearing clever (surprised nobody has done this it being STW!)

2 things these threads always make me realise: 1) i love films, and 2) perhaps people aren't joking about 'the princess bride' and i should ignore the title and maybe check it out.

Hm. Guess it's time for a rewatch.

perhaps people aren't joking about 'the princess bride'

The thing with TPB is, ostensibly, it's a family film. If you go in expecting The Godfather you're going to be disappointed. However, as family films go, it's tremendous.

Ages ago now, there used to be a website where you could submit your favourite movie quotes. The front page carried a disclaimer that The Princess Bride was banned from the site, on the grounds that they'd have to submit the entire script otherwise.

1st Zodiac - proper creeply thriller and based on true story.

2nd Jackie Brown, love the mood of the film, excellent music, perhaps best supporting role ever by Michael Keaton.

3rd Road trip, the grandad taking viagra and knocking over ornaments with his boner, stealing the blind school bus. Jumping the bridge, never fails to make me laugh until it hurts.

Princess Bride - is class. (the sword fight where he annouces he is in fact right handed! - brilliant).

you killed my father ... prepare to die 😀

For me, my list of fav films will always have:

Shawshank - The record scene playing out over the tannoy - best scene ever in my books.

Blue Brothers - Always just loved the relaxed feel to it.

Blade Runner - To me, that is how the future will look and feel.

As for others ... you cant have just 3 ....

Star Wars
Dark Knight
TPB
