...the time has come after years of iPhone ownership to possibly try an android i'm on my 3rd iPhone this year !
transferring photo/contacts done by google drive but how do you transfer SMS ????

I think you have to do a lot of fettling saving files off and loading using some thing on the android side.
Go through the sms and get the 3 useful bits of info from them, update your address book with people's numbers and forget about the rest?
Smooth sync is really good for synchronisation of iCloud calendars and contacts if you have a good iCloud/me.com email you want to keep using or if you also have an iPad.
Depending on which android you get they have data transfer apps which are handy.
As above though, how many SMS do you really want to keep?
