Looking at getting a portable air con unit to put on the landing to cool the upstairs at night , so the kids can sleep better
Budget £200-£300 ...
Ive also noticed some have a hose out the back to vent the warm air , Are they all like this ?, as where i want to put it is no where near a window etc to vent it ?

Cheers

Yes. The physics dictate that if you chill some air by sucking all the heat out of it, you need to dump it somewhere.

They all have the hose out the back and it needs to vent straight outside or it just heats up the air again.

I'd recommend that you don't bother, they're a lot noiser than you might think and they cost a packet to run so expect a decent spike in your electricity bills if you do go for one.

You also need to keep all your windows closed when it's running or you'll end up cooling the street.

My skinflint tip is to buy a desk fan and put a bowl of ice (you can put the whole bowl in the freezer to re-freeze once it melts) in front of it so it blows over the ice. It's surprisingly effective if you get the angle of blow correct.....

it's also a lot cheaper and much quieter...

We put a combined ceiling light/fan from Argos in our bedroom. Simply having the air moved around makes a load of difference. As does opening all the windows & blasting the fan on high for 10 mins before going to bed. Dont go with A/C, simply not needed for homes in this country.

AC is the work of the devil.

What you need is air. proper air.
