Average dude in what way? Average non-exercising person or average fit non-body builder?

So you have been over 93kg for the last 18 months then?

Er.. well maybe more like 12 ish bearing in mind I dropped down to 91-92 ish by January after having a break from exercise from November til last month.

But yeah for a fair old while. I was doing a fair bit of exercise still - running twice a week, intervals twice a week, maybe a longer ride, but the weight stayed up.

It's interesting. Looks like baked beans might be bad; they didn't test milk but yoghurt is bad; but cheese might be okay...? Peanuts look like a great snack though which is good because I ploughed my way through a fair few the last couple of weeks.

Nice link Captain.

I am about to enter an experimental phase, would like to get very lean in 8 weeks.

Jamie, kettle has boiled dry.

MG - baked beans have a lot of added sugar

iDave - nice - before and after pics and stats please 🙂

For clarification - on that graph beans means baked beans.

I knew they had sugar, but I didn't know it was that bad.. oh well.

What sort of yoghurt is it? Like natural, unflavoured yoghurt or some sugar-packed, fudge brownie-flavoured monstrosity. I can imagine there's a bit of a difference between the two.

Jamie, kettle has boiled dry.

In so many ways Dave.

I am about to enter an experimental phase, would like to get very lean in 8 weeks.

Sounds interesting. Unfortunately I am too much of a tard to stick to anything more complicated than tying my shoe laces. Sounds like a job for TSY.

I'm nervous about posting a before pic without a decent after pic to back it up

Could be motivating to know you have to produce a better after pic?

It's the motivational aspect that is making me try and get you to post the pic now.

We can keep reviving the thread to keep the motivation going for you 🙂

I once ate 4 fishfinger sandwiches with 8 different combinations of sauces in the name of STW science. I'm an ideal test subject.

Oh I've been reading that Four Hour Body book. To be honest the book itself grates, it's very self-helpy. I just wish you could get an abridged version with just the science in it 🙂 I think if I met the guy I'd admire his body then punch him in his ripped abs 😉

It was quite bad actually, I read it before bed and it left me feeling anxious all night and I didn't sleep well.. odd that.

About half way through reading the thread yesterday, all the talk of healthy food made me crave sugar so i went to get a kit kat 🙂

Today i'm eating carrots, sugar snaps peas and almonds, but its not doing the job!

I'm an ideal test subject.
*evil laugh*

mol, post up the pic, you have the backing of stw, what can go wrong?!

So if I post it up how long before you demand an after pic? Do I wait a pre-agreed number of weeks or wait til I get to a weight threshold?

Today's food btw was eggs and bacon (out of beans - fortunately it seems) and a black coffee, then another coffee with a finger of milk and a pinch of sugar 😳 )

molgrips... I thought the interesting graph from that study was the one which compared the GI to the Insulin Index... which had beef way out as the highest.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the graph is for insulin level compared to white bread for equal calorific value of each foodstuff (1000kCal I think it was)... which means that the cheese amount was about 59g whereas apples were 450g-ish... so they might not stack up to actual serving sizes!

I imagine 4 weeks would be a good marker. Put the first pic on 1st April for example and the after pic on 1st May. Don't set a target weight, just stick to all the tenants of the iDave way and do your exercise and see how you get on.

....is one way of doing it.

Why did 4 Hour Body make you feel anxious? I thought there was more than enough science stuff given that it's not a science text book?

I don't go along with the over keen use of supplements, but other than that much of the book is excellent. Although that could be because it backs methods I've been using for years.

As for 'self-helpy', the only helping hand you'll get is at the end of your own arm. So self help would seem quite appropriate.

If its in speedos, then every day please? 😆

/Sensible hat on/ I reckon every 4 weeks too. Have you done the measuring tape stuff too? Could be a better marker than just weight?

EDIT: if anyone has any ideas on how to kick a serious chocolate addiction, let me know (i'm not doing a before and after photo like mol but i want to lose 2 kgs)

I dunno actually - I'm quite happy to forgive him since that's the kind of book it is.. perhaps it was the hammer it home 'you can do it' stuff, I dunno. Very interesting nonetheless. Anyway I'm still on the intro bits and not the details.

If there was a science textbook I'd choose that - I'm a geek remember! 🙂

the only helping hand you'll get is at the end of your own arm.

I dunno - you've been tremendously helpful so far. It's true that discipline is ultimately down to one's self but being given good information is sometimes essential for success.

EDIT: if anyone has any ideas on how to kick a serious chocolate addiction, let me know

Yes - WTFU. Chocolate's not that addictive. refined carbs or calories in general* are harder to kick. Why d'you want to lose only 2kg?

* but as we now know it's not necessary to restrict calories overall...

Can I ask a couple of quick questions related to drinking while on your Diet, appologies if it's already been covered but are diet fizzy drinks allowed? (I'm addicted to Diet Coke, but trying to cut down).. and how much red wine is allowed (daily)?
Thanks.

Yes, diet coke is vile, plus it's really really bad for you in subtle ways.

I think there's also a neurological effect of sweet tasting things - making you want more.

I suppose you could get on the iDave diet and restrict your chocolate consumption to your free day. 🙂

MG - enjoying your posts and endless debating. I see where you are going. However, the one area I would take issue with you on is that from the stats you have given us (your height and weight) I think you have to be honest with yourself and acknowledge that you are a bit of a chubber. A bit, not a lot. And this is not a judgement from a skinny whippet as your stats are not too disimilar to mine and being totally honest I know that I am a bit of a chubber. In today's society I may look normal (well, with clothes on) but a speedo or mankini would reveal a level of chunkiness that was not present when I was a lot younger. Intrigued to see how you do on the eating plan and also how effective it is when you don't stick rigidly to it.

Subtle ways? Go on then....what?

Personally I think if you have bit of willpower that negates this apparent effect.

Well thanks, most people don't 🙂

I am carrying an extra few lbs but I'm not as fat as those stats would suggest. The before pic will show what I mean.

No-one else in real life thinks I am fat and everyone wonders why on earth I'm 'dieting' so to speak.

The negative effects of aspartame are widely discussed on the internet Jamie...

GW - do you think it's an OK drink? If you don't, you could choose to do something about it.

You will find debate about whether tea or coffee is bad for you or good for you. Evidence for both.

Has dietcoke ever been suggested to be good for you?

MG - a 'few extra pounds', is far from the 18kg loss that would get you to 70kg. Is that level of weight loss realistic?

No. I'd never try to justify Coke as good for you but compared to a lot of things I've ingested over the years it's fairly harmless.
just wanted to know if it'd be detrimental to the effect of the diet?

I thought that they'd done studies on dietCoke / aspertamine (sp?) and other sugar substitutes and concluded that they actually encourage you to eat more because of the effect/tricks they play on your body?

No, not really.. I reckon 75kg is as whippet as I am going to get or really should be - perhaps not even that. I'd be happy with sub 80.

I said a few extra lbs thinking in normal daily life terms. In racing whippet terms it's more than that 🙂

FWIW I thought I'd share that I've been trying the 4 hour body diet (which I believe has some similarities to the iDave plan)for a month and, bearing in mind I have done no exercise for the last 3 weeks due to a knee injury, I have lost exactly 1 stone in weight and 2 inches off my waist line. I can almost see Abs!!

I'm 6'2" and am now 14st 11 lbs

It's not as though I've stuck rigidly to it either, there have been a number of lapses (birthdays, meals out etc) but I'm well impressed with the results. I'm eating huge quantities of (the right) food too and haven't felt hungry once. Not missing, bread, pasta, cereals or potatoes and am almost forcing myself to eat them on the day off.

Bregante - congrats (since this thread is now a love-in).. just wondering, how strictly observant did you manage to be?

What I meant was that I don't think sub 75kg would be particularly healthy.

I meant for me personally. I suspect that I'd have to have a pretty low body fat to achieve that or start losing some muscle on the legs and upper body, but I am not sure - that's just a guess really.

Back in 2002 I lost quite a bit of weight whilst off work and I got to 77kg with maybe 12% bf but I was a lot less muscular then.

....or start losing some muscle on the legs and upper body.

this is why i find your case interesting as i wonder if your peak performance weight would actually be achieved by droping some muscle bulk.

again though this depends on exactly what event you want to have the body composition for.

Good question phil.w - there are few people in Elite who share my body type, although there are some. MTBing tends to have a lot of climbing in it.

Watching track racing on telly for the first time was a bit of an inspiration to be honest - blokes that look more like me.

Yeah true. I still think I'd be better at the pure sprinting than the MTBing. If I ever manage to make a living in or near Cardiff during the week I'll get myself to the Newport Track for their race nights.

iDave, is it ok to mail you about iDave Diet+?

Been struggling with diet for far too long but might need help. Was in a similar state with exercise last year, started PT sessions and have improved my fitness quite a bit (still rubbish, but much less rubbish). A year later still doing a mix of riding, spinning, gym, boxing and boot-camp for fun.

Looked at a few Nutritionist's websites last night and there seemed to be a lot of "use this product" or "superfoods" and accreditations from slightly iffy sounding associations. Maybe I'm too skeptic, but seemed like snake oil to me.

I know I should be able to motivate myself but struggle on and off with depression and not in a great place at the moment (might post about that but this isn't the thread). Just ordered The 4 Hour Body Book and The Chimp Paradox, so gonna try the self help angle too.

Thanks,

smoggy

other than Coke (Coke Zero to be precise) and Chocolate I actually can't stand sweet stuff so your "theory" doesn't really make sense.

My 'theory' didn't have enough information then.. many people (me included) do crave sweet stuff and might be tempted to use diet fizzy drinks as an alternative, and this might not be good.

Just discussing the issues in a general non specific way, don't get defensive! 🙂
