Er, it gets zeroed regularly.
I didn't know there was a calibration procedure.
and dug up something which seems to suggest there is a similar spike with high protein/low carb foods like meat and eggs. So I think it is a little more complex than just insulin levels...
Nutritional lab studies are notoriously difficult to control/compare.
There is so much dependence upon the background nutrition levels of the subjects and how the parameters are measured.
Regarding the "insulin thing" - I'm particularly interetsed in food combinations as I feel that we should think in terms of the GI/Insulin potential of a whole meal rather than it's individual components.
I also agree that iDave has had to make generalisations for the purpose of clarity/brevity and that individual cases will obviously differ and the fine lines bewteen allowed/banned foodstuffs is really for the individual to try and see if they make a difference.
Obviousely where health issues are invoivled 'try it and see' is not a good option !
Anyway, Q for molgrips - have you ever tried vitamin B/chromium supplements to kick in the fat burning ?? Would be interested to hear anyone's experience of this approach......
No, not tried those.
Only supplements I've taken are:
L-Carnitine - inconclusive but really seemed to slow me down at the top end - no idea if that was the amount of base I was doing at the time or not.
HMB - no idea if it worked or not, I didn't end up a beefcake.
Ribose - on its own - unsure, but Torq recovery drink that contains it is rocket fuel. Or rocket re-fuel...
molgrips are you racing this season?
No. I'm in Germany until end of July then we've got a kid on the way mid August so there won't be much opportunity. Might do something like the Oktoberfest in Bristol or some of the late season Gorricks.
I'll see if there's a road race in Germany I can do ๐
trickydisco - where/with who did you have your performance test done. I'm looking to do something similar and would also want to include a running one.
Aw whut? 2 Whole pages to read through since this morning?

I wouldn't bother jamie - same old same old bollox, including from me
Having pasta and meatballs with parmesan cheese tonight. All washed down with cheap Chilean red.
Pudding is two packs of Chewits in front of a box set of the Sopranos.
Anyone says that's not allowed gets "whacked".
same old same old bollox, including from me
mebbe, but damn fine bollies they are....
It's an illuminating discussion with good points made by all - eat to live, live to ride ๐

I expect your kitchen is full of steam now Jamie. I hope the wallpaper is ok?
Luckily I keep the kettle in the sauna.

Feeling today's 40 miles in the legs. Hope I haven't gone off too hard this week.
Oh and Mrs Grips bought some scales.
88kg. So 2 or 3 down, or maybe even 4 - I was 91.5 ish before I left for Munich, no idea what happened between then and now.
Same old shite. Same old pisstakers. Same old taggers.

You do remember what one of those is? ๐

This may be of interest:
Thanks CaptJon, very interesting... although it's interesting that they note that while there is some tie up between GI and Insulin response, it's not a perfect indicator.
This quote from the paper
A low-fat diet based on less-refined, carbohydrate-rich foods with relatively low ISs may help enhance satiety and aid weight loss as well as improve blood glucose and lipid control
seems to be agreeing with iDave.
can someone send me a copy of the plan please - email is my username @gmail.com
Just realised, I've been over 91kg for the last 18 months, and most of that was 93-94kg, so this is good progress for me. I think a lot of that 94kg was muscle tho but a lot wasn't.
Nice link CapnJon.
Just realised, I've been over 91kg for the last 18 months, and most of that was 93-94kg.
So you have been over 93kg for the last 18 months then?
I think a lot of that 94kg was muscle tho
Hard to say really without a proper BF measurement, but remember skeletal muscle will never usually be more than 42% of your total mass.*
*for the average dude.
Average dude in what way? Average non-exercising person or average fit non-body builder?
So you have been over 93kg for the last 18 months then?
Er.. well maybe more like 12 ish bearing in mind I dropped down to 91-92 ish by January after having a break from exercise from November til last month.
But yeah for a fair old while. I was doing a fair bit of exercise still - running twice a week, intervals twice a week, maybe a longer ride, but the weight stayed up.
So you have been over 93kg for the last 18 months then?
Been over 50kg for the last 18 months too..... Whippet!

It's interesting. Looks like baked beans might be bad; they didn't test milk but yoghurt is bad; but cheese might be okay...? Peanuts look like a great snack though which is good because I ploughed my way through a fair few the last couple of weeks.
Nice link Captain.
I am about to enter an experimental phase, would like to get very lean in 8 weeks.
Jamie, kettle has boiled dry.
MG - baked beans have a lot of added sugar
iDave - nice - before and after pics and stats please ๐
For clarification - on that graph beans means baked beans.
I knew they had sugar, but I didn't know it was that bad.. oh well.
iDave... more than happy to be a test subject.
I dropped you an e-mail yesterday ๐
Molgrips you need to post your before pic now me thinks!
What sort of yoghurt is it? Like natural, unflavoured yoghurt or some sugar-packed, fudge brownie-flavoured monstrosity. I can imagine there's a bit of a difference between the two.
I'm nervous about posting a before pic without a decent after pic to back it up ๐
Jamie, kettle has boiled dry.
In so many ways Dave.
I am about to enter an experimental phase, would like to get very lean in 8 weeks.
Sounds interesting. Unfortunately I am too much of a tard to stick to anything more complicated than tying my shoe laces. Sounds like a job for TSY.
I'm nervous about posting a before pic without a decent after pic to back it up
Could be motivating to know you have to produce a better after pic?
Hmm.. I do have photoshop on my PC.

It's the motivational aspect that is making me try and get you to post the pic now.
We can keep reviving the thread to keep the motivation going for you ๐
I once ate 4 fishfinger sandwiches with 8 different combinations of sauces in the name of STW science. I'm an ideal test subject.
Oh I've been reading that Four Hour Body book. To be honest the book itself grates, it's very self-helpy. I just wish you could get an abridged version with just the science in it ๐ I think if I met the guy I'd admire his body then punch him in his ripped abs ๐
It was quite bad actually, I read it before bed and it left me feeling anxious all night and I didn't sleep well.. odd that.
dont know about anyone else, but these threads just make me hungry
today its pine nuts and almonds.
So far today I have had porridge, almonds, protein shake and a banana.
About half way through reading the thread yesterday, all the talk of healthy food made me crave sugar so i went to get a kit kat ๐
Today i'm eating carrots, sugar snaps peas and almonds, but its not doing the job!
*evil laugh*I'm an ideal test subject.
mol, post up the pic, you have the backing of stw, what can go wrong?!
So if I post it up how long before you demand an after pic? Do I wait a pre-agreed number of weeks or wait til I get to a weight threshold?
Today's food btw was eggs and bacon (out of beans - fortunately it seems) and a black coffee, then another coffee with a finger of milk and a pinch of sugar ๐ณ )
molgrips... I thought the interesting graph from that study was the one which compared the GI to the Insulin Index... which had beef way out as the highest.
It's also worth bearing in mind that the graph is for insulin level compared to white bread for equal calorific value of each foodstuff (1000kCal I think it was)... which means that the cheese amount was about 59g whereas apples were 450g-ish... so they might not stack up to actual serving sizes!
So if I post it up how long before you demand an after pic? Do I wait a pre-agreed number of weeks or wait til I get to a weight threshold?
I imagine 4 weeks would be a good marker. Put the first pic on 1st April for example and the after pic on 1st May. Don't set a target weight, just stick to all the tenants of the iDave way and do your exercise and see how you get on.
....is one way of doing it.
Why did 4 Hour Body make you feel anxious? I thought there was more than enough science stuff given that it's not a science text book?
I don't go along with the over keen use of supplements, but other than that much of the book is excellent. Although that could be because it backs methods I've been using for years.
As for 'self-helpy', the only helping hand you'll get is at the end of your own arm. So self help would seem quite appropriate.
