Came home to find the toilet cistern leaking where it's fed by the water pipe 😡 I've exhausted all my plumbing knowledge by wrapping ptfe tape around the threaded part and doing it up again, however it stil leaks out the back of the metal nut, see red arrow in pic.

I was surprised to see that was no washer or similar in the metal part, can't see how it should seal without one:

Any ideas how to fix this?

It should have a fibre washer in there. PTFE on the thread wont do anything - the cistern connector should form a seal end-on.

As above. More than likely it needs a new fibre washer.

PTFE on the threads isn't going to help.

Nice one. Just had a dig around in there and found a mashed up red washer, new one tomorrow.

Isn't there a little ring thing between the nut and the pipe that isn't screw threaded. Called an olive. Get another one of those from a plumbing shop and pop it in to replace the one currently in there.

You might get away with taking it apart, reseating the current olive and doing it up again.

Don't do it up really tight - doing up too tight will squeeze the olive and damage it meaning you'll need a new one. If you did that already you might need a new olive because of that.

Google compression fitting leak for more knowledgable advice.

Edit: complete fail to spot it was a plastic pipe, ignore me!

You're thinking of a compression joint JM

Thats not what that is. A cistern connector has a swaged end with a flat face. The fibre washer sits between the swaging and the cistern inlet pipe face and when the nut is tightened forms a seal.

Except on the one upstairs here where changing the washer didn't do anything.

I'll put the water to it back on in a bit and see if it's swollen a little.
