Yep, Himalayan balsam, invasive weed. Taking over parts of the countryside at quite an alarming rate, there's tons of it round our way.

Tap the seed pods, if they're ripe they explode and can fire the seeds quite a distance, entertaining...

I'd never seen it until a couple of years ago, but there's a load of it on some of our local trails.

they are easy to pull up. you must snap the stalk though to finish it off once pulled.

i make an effort to get rid of at least 10 on every ride or walk when out and about.

We were told to inform work and mark on a map where we saw it on the river. We told them to just highlight the start of the Nene and carry straight down to Orton in Peterborough 🙂

And once growing, Himalayan balsam can proliferate at a fearsome rate. Each plant produces an average of about 800 seeds, which means that a dense mass of the plants can contain a potential 30,000 seeds per square metre. And the explosive fruit pods can project the seeds several metres. So entertaining can it be to see the pods “pop” that it has even been marketed as a novelty for children – “Mr Noisy’s Exploding Plant” – once sold by, among other outlets, Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

what does notifiable mean?-

It means its your duty to notify the authorities if you come across it. Certain invasive weeds, pests and infectious diseases are classed as notifiable.

They taken over the local river banks (bejesus 4 years ago) the last couple of years. Not much anyone can seemingly do, with their ability to throw their seeds upto 7m's!
Seems to need a damp environment to thrive, but the local bee population seem to love them
