wife's 40th and now that flight go direct to Amsterdam from inverness thought id treat her to a long weekend. Any suggestions for areas to look into for places to stay. As wife will be with me would rather not have a room over an S&M parlor!

The Okura is really, really nice indeed. It's not central but when I stayed there I didn't find this a problem.

I like the Intercontinental there it's pretty plush and in a great spot.

Fellow invernesian here. We stayed in the Hampshire Manor Amsterdam. Nice place ad only about 10mins on the tram away from Dam Square

Unless she really wants to go there, I'd go somewhere else.

Maybe I'm biased, but I don't like the place - based on many, many work trips and nights out.

The De-Hallen hotel, it's a converted tram depot in a nice quiet area but still pretty central.
At the rear is the De-Hallen food hall full of specialist bars and food stalls.

Stayed there last year and thinking of going again this year.

I'd disagree in full. Love the place. Yes, there's that little bit in the middle that's a bit scuzzy, but the rest of the city is a delight.

FWIW, I've always been very well looked after by the Park Hotel down by the Vondelpark.

Hotel Seven Bridges - small hotel on canal in very good location near Rembrandtsplein but still quiet - use to live nearby and my visitors would stay here.

Second vote for anywhere near vondelpark. Leidseplein is a great place to base yourself and head into the centre as and when. Also has a 'Febo' open 24/7 for when the munchies take hold. They do a meat croquette that is more addictive than crack.
The American Hotel is very reasonable and has a great deco cocktail bar, I met Ronnie Wood there during my last visit.
