A court in Qatar has convicted a Dutch woman of having sex outside marriage after she told police she was raped.
The 22-year-old was handed a suspended sentence and fined $824 (£580). She will also be deported.
Her lawyer said her drink had been spiked at a Doha hotel in March and she had woken up in a stranger's flat, where she realised she had been raped.
A lot of people are there for work.
I don't think most people actually want to go there.
Especially the 7000 slave labourers building the WC stadiums.
Some people still want to go on holiday to the Red Sea / Tunisia.
Lack of education will continue to create idiots and idiotic laws.
Indeed saw this yesterday. Sadly it seems standard practice in Middle Eastern countries with rape accusations, jail tje victim for illegal sex and drinking.
She was lucky she was deported, a ex colleague of mine couldn't leave as they confiscated his passport plus he had no job and no ability tomwork as his employer cancelled his work permit after he sued them for reneging on his contract.

Qatar, Dubai, UAE etc offer 'luxury' holidays to westerners, where they can bask in the sun and be waited on hand and foot, in a manner they won't find in Europe or elsewhere. This is achieved through near-slavery, abuse and rampant exploitation of people from the Indian Subcontinent, Far East and Africa, lured by the promise of great financial reward, then finding the reality is somewhat different.
These places are disgustingly corrupt oases of greed and excess. Interesting that our prime minister didn't mention them to the queen.
How anyone can go to these places, where the above (and even worse) happens, is well beyond me. But maybe that's because I've got a conscience.

Heard this on the radio this morning (as the final news item, WTF?) Seems the attackers (plural) have been sentenced to be lashed.
I have stayed in a few of the hotels in that area but not the one where the incident happened. Generally the area is fine. However, Doha really isn't a place to be out drinking as a female on your own and an odd place for a holiday IMO.

Hard to take that Deadspin coverage seriously when they start with:

Its really poor that the BBC decided that that fact wasn't worth reporting!

The woman has been detained since making the allegation three months ago, but her case only came to light over the weekend when her family decided to go public.

I read the BBC article earlier and the three months in custody was mentioned. It specifically said the family had only just agreed to the case being reported.

I CBA to check your figure, but a lot of the figures banded by about NGO's are ....k will die during the construction of the venues.
Note the specific wording. That's deaths from all causes (road traffic accidents, food poisoning, natural causes, everything), and during the time period (so also includes all other construction projects, oil refineries, hotels, roads, not just the stadium).
It's still a crap record, but it's a hugely over inflated figure. Like saying 3million people will die during the construction of crossrail. None anything to do with the project itself, but probably true as a statement.

Probably just me skimming the BBC one after reading the Deadspin and Guardian coverage more thoroughly which put much more emphasis on her having been detained for so long
Again she was the victim of rape and got jailed for it 😯
@Dragon - Deadspin have an irreverent attitude but underlying strong journalistic ethic. They've broken a lot of stories from shady sports practices

The corruption of the last two World Cup awards stinks more with every passing day.
Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Dubai etc are all trying to be winter sun holiday destinations whats why they allow alcohol in the hotels.
Of course it was corrupt that's how the world works especially at pro sport level, the UK Olympic bid was far from squeaky clean, albeit nothing like the levels I suspect Russia and Qatar did. I actually passed a chap in UEFA tracksuit in one of the hotels, was tempted to make an audible joke, but decided better of it.
The standards on the sites for the Olympic stadiums aren't too bad from what I could see, I think the scrutiny on them has helped improve H&S on these prestigious projects. It is the out of site construction projects that are undoubtedly highly dubious.
I worked in the Emirates Saudi and Bahrain in the 90s and would never go back and dissuade any if my kids going/working there. One day soon the whole **** hole will implode - if there is proof that wealth allows anything to be acceptable it's the Saudis.

Thing about corruption is, I'm sure the UK olympic bid was corrupt but it was also a good bid. Whereas this feels like a case of money making an event go somewhere it would never have gone otherwise. Not really the same thing IMO
If we were to only deal with countries less corrupt than the UK then i'm not sure how many countries that would leave for us to deal with.

TBH, everyone i know who has been out there has hated it and come back as soon as possible. Those who stayed out i don't know anymore.
