I somehow ruined this in Snapseed (see glow around skirt) so went back the following evening to try my luck. By then, two huge dog (I hope) turds had appeared in the alley, somewhat spoiling the composition

I wasn't sure how much of a difference to the toning and feel of an image shooting on B&W film (as opposed to shooting RAW and then converting to B&W) would make. But the first roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 thorugh the Hasselblad leaves me feeling incredibly excited:

that's lovely GT. I'm a big fan of tri X, need to get back into it.

I prefer film b+w MUCH more than digital b+w.
Chalk and cheese.
I have exactly the same experience GT when shooting b+w film, with digi i always think "wish i'd had a film camera on me"

I hate sound like a total arse Polarisandy but I really prefer your BW stuff. Somehow much of your subject matter seems to work better in mono to me.

No it's not being an arse, and you know i was just thinking the same thing..
b+w is where i am more comfortable and i see things better in b+w, i just force myself to shoot colour cos i need the practice.
