My Sony A55 kit lens opens to f3.5, but in A mode, the camera won't let me go larger than 4.5 - any ideas why?

Had it answered on DPR - it's to do with focal length.

It will change at the wider setting on your lens

It normally is as you will lose a point or two on focal length with cheaper lenses. I assumed from the OP that you were talking about the same focal length.
