Anyone got one of B&Q's cheap ones? It seems that unless I spend at least £300 I am going to be buying the equivalent of a Motorcity Mtn Bike Special. Is it simply a case of the old 'Marin' syndrome where everyone says they are crap when what they mean is you need a niche mower (bike) that costs a billion quid when there is nothing wrong with them and they last forever? (I know I had one):)
Any advice welcome :0)
get a honda or atco from fleabay
+1 for used Honda
A honda! I havent won the lottery folks ;0)
Work as a landscape gardener, do a fair bit of lawnmowing over the summer months, on occasion have used clients mowers (where they asked if it could be done when I arrived at their place), compared to a proper mower all the B&Q type ones are hideous. I use a Viking mower and have it serviced every year, and know that it will still be going when most people are onto their fourth cheap lawnmower. Admittedly it probably sees a fair bit more use than your average mower, but in terms of reliability and ease of use its worth spending a bit more to get something decent
Get a used Honda Izy... sweet!
My father-in-law bought me one (I think for somewhere around £140) three years ago. Fantastic little mower.
I got a strimmer and lawnmower package off argos for £130 a few years ago, the lawnmower works, but has needed a lot of repairs where plastic body/components have failed. Still cuts the grass tho, but id reccomend one with a metal body ideally, The strimmer is ****ing horrible to use, you lose all feeling in your arms after using it for 15m due to vibration.
Ive got a fairly large garden but I hate gardening so i'd rather spend money on anything other than lawnmowers and such, so I put up with them, but i'll probably get something a little better when they die
I got one from Payless 4 years ago has a metal deck & although I'm ashamed to say it hasn't had any maintenance since I first filled the sump with oil, it still starts with a half hearted pull on the cord.
More than anything B&Q mowers are a lesson in you get what you pay for - bought a petrol one from them three years ago for £114, filled it with oil and petrol and started to cut my grass - it cut ok but nothing special but within a few months became increasingly difficult to start due to oiling of the plug, tried to adjust fuel as it seemed to run too rich but everything is made of cheap emmental so there is little you can adjust before it snaps or rounds. By the end of the first year both front weed had cracked so contacted the customer service line to enquire about replacement wheels, was told that this was an obsolete model and parts were no longer stocked. So **** that bit the bullet and bought a Honda at £240 and not one bit of bother since
Honda Izy. You'll be be glad you did...really you will.
Started with a cheal Husqvana, engine shool itself to pieces and firm I bought it from claimed that I must have the wrong type of grass. Not quite clear what they meant as I was local to them and their green stuff looked mightily similar to mine - they wouldn't elaborate. Finished up with a petrol Hayter with a metal deck - it gets serviced about once every two years and gives no trouble.
The cheapest Honda is a lot less than £300.
Mine starts first time, every time. Unlike the cheap petrol hedge trimmer I bought off ebay.
yeh, cheapo one here, but with a honda engine
thrives on neglect
I have a knackered-looking but functional old Honda-based thing that cost me nowt. It's been serviced precisely no times in the past five years, is held together with gaffer tape and cardboard and a bit of old milk carton, and it does the job just fine. We have lots of bumpy grass on three lawns to mow, it takes a good hour or so each time. I wouldn't dream of treating a bike as badly as I treat that lawnmower, yet it's still going; quite impressive now I come to think about it. If I had to buy a new one I'd probably start looking at Hondas.
Bought a secondhand Morrison 20" from my local Lawnmower shop secondhand for £150 2 years ago for Mrs Wellhung still going well.
I bought an italian petrol mower from ebay, 15 YEARS AGO! for 70 quid.
It gets left out in the rain and snow all year, has no maintenance done on it until it won't start and then I scrub the rust off the spark plug lead. It is really powerful and doesn't stop for nothing hidden in the grass and will happily mow soaking wet grass that's been growing long for 6 months.
It just works and has done for a long time, brilliant! Get one of those.
