So I have this car stereo system thing that links to apps on the iPhone5, in order to function two leads amalgamate into one via a short converter lead which then plugs into the connector of the phone, but the lead is too short.
Apple don't make an extension lead , but I found one via amazon which appeared to do the job and worked fine for a while, until today that is. The damn phone is now giving me a message saying the lead isn't registered or valid somehow and everything's gone haywire.

So the obvious question, how can the phone software detect the cable type, never mind the obvious typical Apple annoyance don't make a lead but don't let anyone else make one. And is there a hack?

I know there are some genned up IT types on here so if anyone can help STW will...

The last time you plugged your phone into your computer (mac/pc) it updated the operating system on your iPhone and now it knows that you have a shonky extension lead, can you not just link using bluetooth?. Otherwise buy an apple certified extension lead.

Yep, there's a little chip in Lightning cables, so your device knows if they're dodgy. PITA.

Crikey, Apple really likes locking people in forever don't they ... 😯

It didn't used to be like this, once upon a time Apple was the rebel alliance and Microsoft were the Evil Empire... 👿

Shit like this is why you shouldn't buy Apple tbh. Locking you into their accessories for no reason other than profiteering is merely bad. Preventing you from using your property as you want to is put-it-back-in-the-box-and-send-it-back bad.

Meh, I just buy dodgy cables that are "certified to work with iOSx.x", although admittedly I had to buy new ones when they updated to the latest OS as it rendered my cheap cables duff. All of about £5.

It is a pain though, there's no need to do it whatsoever.

I'm surprised they are allowed to make their products lock you into using only their aftermarket bits and pieces.

What is their justification of tying it down like that? Performance? End-user experience? Or just plain old, we can make money from this?

I read a couple of weeks ago that one of the reasons they bought Beats Audio is because they are going to start doing headphones with their proprietary connector and do away with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Can you not hack the cable up and make it just a simple extension (If it's got some weird chip in it)?
