Chap at work has just settled on an 08 plate Vectra VXR
280 bhp twin turbo V6 0-60 6.1 secs. Main dealer, 4.5K miles £13,800
So then, performance bargain (he thinks) or unruly handful trip to the 1st hedge (I think)

Or a Vauxhall, so worth buggery in a year or two, Vauxhall's are naff, full stop.

Better off with a used, chipped 330d, p*ss all over the vauxhall

too much power going through the front wheels and the vectra chassis isnt great for handling. Kind of american in that it is fast in a straight line but doesnt corner so well!

You could get yourself a nice 300bhp AWD V70R for that...

Very fast and good looking car. One hell of an engine.

But the handling is dismal if driven hard.

Group test

Torque-steer?
Why spend 14k on a car when the brands residuals are in free-fall??

Spend 14k on a Beemer or an Audi (I hate Audi's) but even I would prefer a S3 or a 3.2V6 A3 to one of those ANY day. Seriously. Don't buy a wifebeater.

Fairly quick car but very chavvy. My mate has one and it's no faster than my V5 Golf - slightly quicker in gear but much shorter legs. Poor build quality too.

Very easy to make it plough on, but then any front wheel drive car with any grunt can be made to do what Clarkson was doing. Anyone with a brain feeds power to the wheels as needed rather than stamping on the throttle and then trying to turn the wheel.

That said, 200bhp is about the maximum front wheel drive can handle.

£14K on coke and hookers would go further and be more fun. Or get a porsche?

A 2.5 turbo Imprezza would rape the Vectra, heck a Focus ST would. Wait until September and you could have a 8k 06 low-miler ST thats easier to live with.

14k can buy a lot of car. Alot more car. If I had a 14k to spend on a performance car, personally I'd buy an Elise or late Imprezza.

Slow POS - 280BHP and it takes more than 6 Secs to get to 60mph. Pish.

Also, I thought they only came in V8 flavour.

For that money I'd have had either...

A new Impreza WRX (brand new) from motorpoint for £13k.
A Focus ST - Mate just sold one, under a year old 8k for £11.5k.

Or if you want more fun less sense then probably an s2000.

Preaching to the converted - I spent 10 years rallying so Impreza for me everytime.
He likes straight speed and F1 on a Sunday. I'd rather suck 5h1t through a rolled up newspaper...

I agree. With 14k I'd get a high powered 3 series or A4. 330d would do me nicely and the money you'll save in the first year on fuel will be a welcome treat.
