I need to get my daughters advent netbook (from pc world) into safe mode to delete a virus - however pressing f8 only gets a tech guys screen with no option to run windows in safe mode.

Any idea how i get round this?

Sounds like you need to hit f8 further in the boot process. What version of windows are you using? Normally you need to hit f8 after the machine has posted, all the techie screens at the stats but before it starts loading windows.

If I hit f8 on startup it takes me to an option to start windows normally or techguys pc help.

Thats the only options, and the techguys stuff only allows disk backup, notepad or dos prompt.

I guess I could start windows in safe mode from the dos prompt if I knew how?

Thanks kid, i'd googled safe mode from tech guys but my rational thinking doesnt extend that far!

I'll try that tonight (and shortly thereafter be posting for help to remove a bot1.exe, whatever that is!)

win /d won't help, unless you're still running Windows 3.1.

PC World remove Safe Mode, for reasons best known to themselves. You'll have to add it back as a boot option, and that's not pretty. I'll see if I can find some instructions, save me typing it all out. Sec.

Here we go.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/784503-getting-into-safe-mode-netbook.html

Follow the instructions in the reply to add a Safe Mode option back to your boot menu. Then next time you F8, you should see XP / TechGimps / XP Safe Mode.

download trinty rescue kit and boot that from a CD. There is a virus killer you can run inside.
