Did a 40k ride today - longest ride in a while due to me being lazy recently.

Half way through the ride I noticed that parts of my anatomy were "going to sleep". Didn't worry about it too much, it's happened before. If I ride out of the saddle for a minute or two it's fine. Today I just left it and kept riding seated - and evidently whilst I was numb, my shorts have rubbed against my skin and chaffed it! I have a patch of road rash on my "you know what" 🙁

With a little white lie about how you got it, bragging rights could be in order there.

a) Buy some chamois cream.
b) Buy some decent bib shorts.
c) Accept that the baggies that are de rigeur in 'modern mountain biking' are actually not as good as a pair of lycra bib shorts, and that most boys wear them because they are scared of people looking at their willies.
d) Wear the bib shorts under the baggies.
e) Think about the position on the bike; sounds like too much weight on your bum, which, as you get tired translates into too much weight on your penile nerve* when your arms get tired.

*if you've got a willy...

I have got a willy - thanks for asking 🙂

oh and thanks for the advice. My shorts are lycra with a nice padded area (although not Bib). I suspect my position is the problem . . .

try chamois cream, or different shorts.

failing that, try a different saddle. I suffered from 'numb knob' syndrome for a while before I discovered WTB saddles - my 'anatomy' (as you put it) gets on fine with WTB.

I think the basic problem is that your saddle is putting too much pressure on your perineum, which is cutting the blood supply and causing you problems.

Find a saddle that fits your bits and you'll be right

maybe your knob is so big it keeps getting in the way.

On the big long list of parts of my body I wouldn't want to go numb, that rates pretty highly.

On the upside, the cure is massage.

Never mind shorts, you need to figure out how to keep blood flowing to your little man! Very important area.. at least mine is!

You need to make sure your weight is on your sit bones, not your soft tissue. This may mean tilting the saddle forward a minute amount - it does for me. You probably also need one with a slot in it, and you need to make sure that the slot matches up with your perineum too, cos it might not. Also don't have too much padding either on the saddle or the shorts, cos it can get wedgied up there cutting into your perineum too. Also you can get shorts without padding in the central area, this also works nicely.

You just don't want to be sitting on the perineum, basically.
