i'm having a mare with my HTC desire, on o2.

Last moth, about mid month I exceeded my 500mb, so stumped up a fiver to top it up.

This month, it's gone by the 7th. I've turned pics and java off to limit data.

o2, when you go over your 500mb, put you on a 'slow data rate'. To be honest, on websites it's not much different, but it seems to have stopped downloading my hotmail.

Anyone else had similar issues? What's the solution?

I use my piddling allowance without even trying, but then that's Vodafone for ya - no idea of a solution.

I've even been sat trying to connect on my Broadband dongle, with no actual website running and used 5mb.

Can you find out what your downloads are...? Sounds like a lot. Are you using wi-fi whenever possible - I.e. all the time at home?

3g watchdog might help?

You should review all programs that update/download from the internet & reduce the update frequency.

my girlfriend had something similar happen on her Desire

it turned out to be google maps and a couple of things trying to 'update' automatically, but were getting stuck and not completing, but constantly transferring data

go into the Market and then My Apps and see if anything needs updating. if so you should be able to cancel it

PS install 'Netscanner' which is a great little app that monitors your monthly/weekly/daily usage and can alert you when you get to a limit

PPS her network provider (3) gave her a refund for the data usage since it wasn't really her fault

On O2 you can get a live update on the phone via the net to show you data allowances, have you seen that?

yeah I've seen that, but it just doesn't explain why it's all going so quickly.

I have no idea what you lot are doing but even if I really work at it, I can't hit my 500Mb limit.

But then I do turn wireless on when I'm at home, do you do that?

as a guide, between 8 engineers at work, who are streaming radio, surfing the net with nary a restriction, watching videos etc. etc. our monthly usage from our fixed connection in the office is ~2Gb.
dunno what your phone is up to to get through 500Mb...

Do you have the "mobile view" set as default when viewing web pages? As a test, if you can manage it try and not deliberately use any web-based apps while connected to mobile internet and see how much data your phone is sucking up of it's own volition. If it's hardly anything, then it must be your browsing habits, or a frequently used program which you know streams data off the net.

I'm also on O2 with a Desire and I go through about 200MB a month. Last month was 208MB, which included listening to Wimbledon and F1 on the bus occasionally, and in fact streaming iPlayer stuff on the bus. Last time I nearly got to my limit was when I was in hospital and I was watching the STW mid-week vids on the front page (they're pretty big...).

The trouble with that is, porn sites often deliver low quality images to mobile devices.

Which can be a huge disappointment.

If you've got 3G watchdog, or similar just reset the counters (or make a note of how many Mb you've used and don't use the internet or any apps for a few hours afterwards.

See how much data you've used. If it's more than a teeny amount, something is chewing through your data without your knowledge/say so.

I mean like Google Maps, Facebook, Mail, BBC News app etc. Basically anything which downloads data when you use it, but is not explicitly browsing the net. Try and avoid all usage except texting and calls just for one day and see what your data total is at the end of it. There might be an app which is downloading stuff in the background!
