Got back in from a brilliant 24 mile night ride last night (the kind where I didn't want to stop, but knew I would suffer on the commute this morning..) to find that the washing machine was playing up.

Managed to get the wet washing out, but now when I try to start a new programme, the dial clicks as though its about to start, but nothing happens - no movement from the drum.
When I put it on the 'drain' function it made the pumping noises, and I am then able to turn it off and open the door again.
I checked the filter and that was fine FWIW
Its a Whirlpool 5145 if that makes any difference.

its about 5 years old - could it be the brushes on the motor?

Try switching it off and on again.

If that doesn't work you need to update the drivers.

Apples never breakdown.

EDIT. I know nothing about washing machines...sorry.

On my old Whirlpool it was the switch on the door that broke. Which meant it wouldnt spin. new switch was only £15 I think. I just googled the model number and looked at the most common breakages.

I now have washing machine insurance as I seem to brake loads and couldnt afford a Miele.

Sounds like it could be brushes. Mine did something similar although it started doing it intermittently. I bent the holder a bit to squeeze a bit more life out of them and ordered some new ones from ebay. Easy fix.

So does the controller still shift round and get to completion? If it's trying to spin and failing then yep brushes and there are places online that'll help you out with that no problem.

brushes are easy to replace too which is always good. Sadly for me I think it's the bearings that are shot on mine - sounds like a rocket taking off when it starts to spin, but it is about 10 years old and regularly used.

When I put it to number 6 on the controller, it registers, then turns a fraction, as it would when its about to start a programme, but then nothing.

I then have to manually turn the dial to the last programme (pump/drain) which it completes and then 'finishes'

@nickjb - i'll try that tonight
