We will be in touch
So the young OAB's are heading onto the great virtual world.
We have a family computer and laptop that are only allowed to be used in a public place. But eldest now has iPod touch and next one will get one in Feb for birthday. Again, we are going to apply physical restrictions on when / where iPods are used.
.
I want to encourage them in tech and web stuff, but also while they are so young limit and monitor what they are upto.
.
We use MS Live Family Security at present, it makes sense to add email addresses on hotmail and carry on down this route.
.
It strikes me looking this morning that there is a massive lack of co-ordination and products for families. Google are missing a trick in that with Google+ it seems that you could easily have the kids added as family and 'sub' email addresses, and this would also interact with youtube etc just nicely.
.
I was also wondering if you can get a router / software that will allow timed blocking of certain things - block all but laptop after say 8pm at night for example.
.
Thoughts?
IIRC W7 can do the controlled access thing based on time, etc though you then need separate logon ids.

BT home hub can block specific devices at times you decide.
I use it to do this, xbox and laptop have no internet access between 8pm and 6am.
It works well, and can be over rulled by me if I need to use it within these times

Easy to do on my router - have you had a poke around in the settings webpage for yours?
Also, consider running your own proxy or dns server, like OpenDNS to give you control over who gets what, when - plus logging etc.
Rather than out and out blocking of websites, you could consider explaining to them that everything is logged, and if they are visiting sites that you don't think they should be, then you will talk to them about it; that may curb their enthusiasm for dirty pr0n, and may be a slightly more adult way of treating them. Having all access cut off after bedtime seems like a good idea though.

Our router is particularly old and doesn't have settings for time limits.
You could try explaining the rules and letting them get on with it.
+1 for openDNS, set up on the router (even old ones should be ok) so it works with Touch's, DS's etc. Not 100% so still need to monitor and explain what's ok.
Right, I need to declare my interest for a start: I work for the below ISP. Yeah, cue the hate....
TalkTalk have an option on their broadband called Homesafe. This operates within the TalkTalk network (i.e. not in your home, but out there in the internet). It's the only ISP with this technology.
So, whatever settings you apply - a parent has "master" control of the account - will work across all devices connected online at home.
