Plus points:

Would certainly earn you a place in history.
You get to be the first to do something that few people will be able to do for probably another hundred or more years.
It'll be easy to get parked.

Bad Points:

You get to die alone on a barren planet 55 million km from home.

What's the pay like?

...and what the hell would you spend it on?

Im sure they would get lots of people volunteer actually - lots of scientists put their whole lifes into science anyway and I am sure some of them would be excited at the prospect of colonising!

Can I take my wife and dogs? What about the chickens?

Martian singletrack? Hmmmm. Dusty, rocky and steep. I'd go with either Panaracer Fire XC or Conti Vapours

mmm why can I not get the image of that bird with 3 breasts from Total Recall out of my head.

If Things got so bad for me here on Earth then I'd probably consider it. To be fair if I got to that point I'd probably be a danger to the other voluteers and thus get turned down.
Catch 22 eh
