Currently in our kitchen we have 5 bins for recyclable goods. Paper/metal/glass/plastic/general waste and now the council are requesting a further bin for unused foodstuffs which we will duly use. These various bins are taking up a lot of space. What solutions are people using to keep all their waste in one area/container? It is not really an option for us to go to the recycle bins every night as we live in the country and they are located at the end of a lane.

Around here we just have two bins (paper/glass/batteries and plastic/tin/foil/etc) - I much preferred the system from 3 years ago which was 1 big wheely bin for everything.
5 is taking the pish (they're just using you to pre-sort the waste instead of paying for it to be done).

I'm not much help am I?

It'll probably all end up in one DMR bin when it they collect it anyway.

Indeed, this year ours told us not to bother separating food waste and put it straight in the normal bin so it can get turned into electricity and the rest of the garden waste can be composted cheaper. We get a bit of space in our kitchen back!

We have three, one for glass, one for all other recyclable stuff, one for waste. The recycling and rubbish go on alternate weeks. Not much of a faff TBH, but 5? That's asking for trouble as by getting the public to think about the segregation. We'll just mess it up an knacker their system at the recycling plant.

Paper recyling bin, consumer packaging bin, and an everything else bin.
Bottles (glass+plastic) go back to get deposit back. Batteries go to a recycling bucket in any store that sells anything electrical.
Oh and now we've got an old electronic components waste bin by the bottle banks too.

We have two bins (general and garden), a plastic box (tin, glass and plastic which is nowhere near big enough for two weeks worth of waste) and a plastic bag (for paper and card).

Or we did have a plastic bag for paper but it blew away after it had been emptied and left on the side of the road.

I just throw it out the car window down a country lain, so much easier and then the council collect/sort it for me.

Just move to Cardiff. You only need one recycling bin.

We have three full sized wheelie bins in the garage, their major impacting on my bike storage, as my partner doesn't want them on display.

Are you sure all those bins are in use? Some haven't been superceded by one of the newer bins?

We've recently got a new blue recycling wheely bin that replaces the previous 2 boxes.

Before our council got better at kerbside recycling we used to use a bunch of stacking bins similar to these

[img] [/img] so that at least the different bins didn't take up more floor space than a single one. My gripe now that they do collect is the 4 different bins they supply are all different shapes and sizes - they hold less but take up much more room. If they were better thought out then they'd take up less space around the house. We've also got a bit of a trek to where the lorry collects from - it would be nice to put the bins out in one trip rather than three.

I might try putting the stacking ones back into action again and see if they'll accept them so long as we group the contents the same way.

I told the council I didn't have room for any extra bins beyond the one green wheelie and had no intention of acquiring any more, thanks.

So - I've got just the one bin. It's not a REQUIREMENT.

The best for us, was the two of our old crates were thrown into the same container, on the collections waggon... So why give us two crates?
Both have since been replaced by one wheelie bin - some-one must have actually given it some thought in the end, will wonders ever cease?

They did that round here too; they were testing the different streams could be handled together before issuing a whole load of new bins and instructions just in case it didn't work. It got lots of local newspaper letters page whinging but did make sense.

One bin for everything metal, glass or plastic except polystyrene, one for garden and food waste, one for everything else.

Sorted.

I know how you feel about them accumulating in the house though, PITA (we have 4 since I compost what I can myself).

We have a purple bag for plastic, glass and metal, a bin for paper, one for general waste and a big 'un for garden waste.

I've heard the glass and plastic from our recycling goes into road aggregate, not the recycling I had in mind.

I've got :-

a green bin for recyclables (glass, plastic, metal etc)
a grey bin for landfill
a brown bin for garden waster (I paid for this one as it's optional)
a small bin for kitchen waste (and a caddy for inside)

Store the lot outside except for the kitchen caddy.

Two here, recycelables and general waste (we take the bottles to the smashy tanks ourselves). Annoyingly to save money there is no longer a garden waste bin so that goes in the general waste as they won't let the van in the "dump" without charging and i'm not putting it in the car.
