Does anyone know of a cheap source of good coffee beans mainly to make espresso's?
I recently bought myself a coffee grinder and a Presso Espresso.
I can now make a reasonable espresso but I am having problems getting good beans at a reasonable price as I am getting through them at a fair rate.
There aren't any specialist shops in the area except Whittards and the prices there are a bit steep while the quality isnt exceptional.
The best I have found so far is M&S Italian blend fair trade which is cheaper than Lavazza and better than Tesco, but there must be better cheaper beans out there.
Thanks
Hasbean is a great source of beans.
They will sell them ground, whole and even unroasted.
They are usually delivered within a few days of being roasted.
I seem to recall you are based in the south? I get my beans from Salisbury market. A small importer/roaster has a stall there, they also do a fair few other markets across the south. Prices are between £3 and £4.50 per £250g so not too bad. Probably about 20 different estate beans available, differing roasts etc. so easy to get suitable ones for espresso. Beans are lovely, and the chap manning the stall can tell you all about them 🙂
Do you want beans to grind yourself or pre-ground espresso coffee?
Whitards is not especially good as they don't sell enough to keep the coffee really fresh. Hasbean is reputedly very good, though I have never bought from them.
Key thing with coffee is to keep oxygen away from it after its roasted. Oxygen causes the coffee to go stale in a few days.
Monmouth Street Coffee sell mail order but their postage is a bit of a killer. The organic espresso blend is fantastic.
