I have a LCD TV which the kids use. One scart socket, a DVD player and a Wii. I was thinking plug one of those multiway adapters back there to stop having to lift the TV off every time they use a different source. Well, got an adapter off someone local and it doesn't appear to work. Not sure if its a TV issue (not recognizing the adapter), an adapter issue or what. Both devices work find plugged directly. and i have tried all the positions in the adapter. there is a little red light on the adapter (which doesnt come on when plugged in), and a hole for what looks like a power supply, but never heard of an adapter like this needing power. So do they need a power supply, is it just duff, or do modern TVs not work with these adapters?

You'll have to explain more what this "adapter" is I think. A photo might help.

It sounds like what you might need is a SCART switchbox. They're shit but they do work.

It's nothing to do with being a modern TV, and in any case, you don't have a modern TV.

Eh? Does the adaptor thing 'do' anything else other than adapt? If not, presumably it needs power otherwise there wouldn't be a power socket?

And yeah, some adaptors / switches need power.

Some of them did come with a power supply as they 'boosted' the picture quality, some had remote controls as well.

Could the Wii not be plugged in using the reb/white/yellow component cables like in this image rather than via the scart adapter that the cables are plugged in to? Then that would free up the only scart socket for the DVD player to use.

I have the same set up, lcd tv with wii and dvd player (and sky) plugged into a multi scart thingy and it works fine (no power needed). My adaptor has a button next to each scart and you press the one you want to use, if you have 2 pressed at once it doesnt work so check you are only selecting one scart at a time or the tv gets confused and doesnt know what one to read. Does your have selector buttons (not shown on your pic) if not that could be the issue.

no buttons on the box no. Assumed that when you turn on a device it takes over preference on the scart box somehow. but even with only one device plugged in so signal gets through.

On the power side of things, will hunt out my spare power supplies and see if one fits, the worry is that there are no markings on the box to suggest what voltage it takes..time will tell...

That looks like a SCART splitter or DA rather than a switcher. If it is then it's to take one source to several screens not several sources to one screen.

Sounds plausible to me.

I'm sure I had something similar when I only had 1 scart socket and a load of consoles to connect to it. It will work but the one I had didn't autoswitch, if you had 2 consoles running at the same time then it displayed both pictures at once.

Yeah. There's no way I can see how a passive (unpowered) "switch" is going to be able to toggle between multiple inputs. If you've got multiple sources attached to that box I'd expect it to just pass all the signals to the TV all the time, like @disco_stu says.

Back when I had one it had buttons to switch between inputs, like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Skytronic-Scart-switch-SCART-sockets/dp/B0007XQA8G

Like all manual switchboxes I've ever used the signal quality was toilet (which is why I stopped using it) but if it's just for kids on a Wii I expect that doesn't matter too much. I ended up buying an AV amp instead which was exponentially better but probably overkill for your usage.

If it is a DA then it probably won't send multiple images to the screen as it's unlikely the input pins are connected. We used to use scart to phono adapters in the dim and distant past, some would have two sets of phono leads others a input/output slider switch on the scart. Easy to check if it's a DA just plug it into one of your sources then test each output to the screen.
