Yep, just take them down sooner rather than later.

Just rock up with your old mattress full and they’ll swap them for gold.
Legally the Bank of England has to honour a banknote at any time due to the Chief Cashier having their signature on it, in reality any bank will exchange it for you if you have an account with them. shermer75 - you either send them in to them or you can do it in person at their Threadneedle St office.
The £1 coin is now legally not legal tender anymore as there is no signature and essentially worthless but there has been a huge amount of pressure from retailers for the cash centres to still process them so the Royal Mint have agreed to still accept them for the time being. This agreement was meant to run out back at the end of December (remember all the retailers fighting over who would still accept them the longest around christmas time?) but will cease very soon (as in it's being renegotiated and pushed back on an almost weekly basis) so I would get rid of any you have ASAP.

Primark still happy to take them, money is money to them and they'll not miss a sale for the sake of sorting the cash out later, seems odd all businesses (who deal in cash) don't take the same view.
Your local post office may also change them - the official note is only in exchange for goods and services, ie buy a 1p stamp. But im still accepting them in my village shop / post office as I bank with the post office daily.
