Oil boiler noises

Calling all oil boiler enthusiasts,

My elderly HRM Starflow is making a strange combustion noise - a sort of “boof, boof, b boof” like a soft misfire. Also the fumes are a bit smellier than usual.

It never locks out because of it (thank you new transformer) but until my boiler guy can come to service it any ideas?

New burner nozzle needed or built up of soot needs cleaned maybe?

Nozzle is only 6 months old, and I cleaned the whole boiler at the same time (I was chasing down a recurring lockout problem which turned out to be the transformer).

Do the burner settings drift over time I wonder?

You checked for water in the tank?

If you cleaned it out, blast tube, electrodes, condense trap if it has one and changed the nozzle then I would expect a combustion test should be carried out as nozzles can differ slightly in their output.
That could cause soot build up which can cause the burner to light in that fluttery way you describe. Oil pressure can be another reason.
