Hi,

I'm currently quite ill from vomiting, poops, and nausea since Wed and have not eaten for 4 days except drinking water.

Doctor told me to rest for a few more days after he came to see me.

I might not be back till Monday.

Will I be in big trouble? I feel guilty for being ill - crazy I know but I want to get back into work.

Will they fire me?

Will depend on your employer and they're policies. If you worked for me and you'd not had any other absence recently I'd be more concerned that you didn't come back too early.

However if you'd already been off alot and been through the absence management process and received warnings I still wouldn't want you back before you were fit but you could be in trouble. If you were in that position with me you'd already be very aware of the situation you were in.

You wont be in trouble, as long as you have doctors note that you are ill, employer would be more in trouble forcing you to work when your doctor told you to rest and you have a note for this... And something happen to you on site or the office .. And 1-2 weeks straight absences with doctors note is considered as "one occasion" (well at least in my previous workplace) .. Read your employee handbook manual 😉

Cheers, I was fine before but got hit by this bug and had to get my old man to visit to get my temperature down with a wet cloth over 2 days.

I want to get back asap. I wish I had a staff handbook but we don't have one - after spending millions on a new site too lol.

No, I have not had previous sick days - that's why this is all new to me.

No warnings yet but have been told to get a fitness certificate.

The advice for Norwalk type viruses is to isolate yourself for 48 hours after your first solid poop.

Don't go back too soon or you could wipe out the entire workforce.

The fitness certificate is nothing to worry about, if the doc has signed you off for 2 weeks you will probably have an appointment back with them at the end of that period. The doc will then either sign you off further if you are still unwell or sign you off as fit to resume work.

This will be required along with your initial doctors note generally for insurance purposes for the company.

Nothing to worry about at all, just get well soon and try and go back fresh and ready to work.

Usually you can self certify for 5 days absence. Any more than that and you'll need a doctor's cert I believe.

In all cases you've usually got nothing to worry about if you keep your employer informed and you're honest about these things. If you don't trust them, or they're incompetent then make sure you have proof. E-mails, text messages and so on.

Some companies also bump you into statutory sick pay after a while. Keep an eye out for that.

Don't worry about, they cant fire you. Go back to work once your better.
If this isn't a regular thing, a good employer should be more concerned about your welfare.
People get sick sometimes.

You may find that going back early invalidates your employers insurance if you have a doctors note for a specified time.
Seriously though, I very much doubt you would get in trouble, and if any of my lot came back early I would be more likely to kick their arses than have an issue with them being off in the first place

Self cert is seven days...
Drs note is valid for the period stated, and is unlikely to need a fitness to return assessment. You can return before it 'ends' if work are happy...

I stand corrected, I had been told that it caused issues, mind you it does sound like some made up HR stuff anyway

If you rush back to work and infect the other staff it wouldn't be getting fired I would worry about...

A proactive and informed employer will have no issues with you being off with this sort of thing. A stupid one may do but will not have a leg to stand on.

I wouldn't worry I'm currently 4th week off sick due to a knee ligament tear. Currently one week into a 3 week sick note and awaiting a Mri scan of my knee to see if it's healing properly.
This is my second period of absence since I started the beginning of December and have had a stage 2 formalsickness meeting. When i go back, i will have my attendance monitored for three months.

Mate, no, they can't fire you for being ill! It's a loooong and drawn out process to fire anyone, and if you have a good attendance record it's not gonna happen. Take the time off. Get better. Seriously, it's only work, it's not important, but your health is.
