I’m looking for summer bike holiday inspiration, the last few years we’ve spent time in Wales & Cumbria, which we love & are reasonably close to us, but could consider something further afield.

Our favourite kind of cycling would probably be summed up as ‘mountain bike adventuring’ rather than say epic downhill or big miles, though it could certainly could include a bit of those. I’d like a multiday trip too though B&B / YHA style accommodation would be necessary as I can’t persuade the Mrs to bike & camp at the same time.

Scottish borders is a contender this year, but I also like the idea of a European adventure, and there is a lot of talk about places like Morzine, and while spending all day in a car doesn’t appeal maybe it’s time to go the distance. Any other suggestions / experiences welcome.

Austria. Big mountains, uplift if that's your thing. Saalbach, Leogang, Wagrain and Schladming.

I've been meaning to go back to Austria I have fond memories of a trip there 20 years ago and it's probably one of the easier to get to by car, I'll look up those locations thanks. I'm told uplifts can help with distance not just downhill, to avoid grinding up hill all day, not that I'm shy of the odd climb.

Some inspiration from yesterday

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/photos-from-bike-packing-trip-down-compostela-trail-in-france-4

Numerous holiday companies, you could, focus a little out if season like September. A few favourites from stw-ers and away from "morzine dh" options and maybe fly instead of drive down ?

Basque-MTB
Sierra-MTB
Bike Riviera

Backcountry weeks with White Room Chalet or Trail Addiction ?

Uplifts (ski lift, public bus, private van, swiss mountain railway) saves the legs and take the meat out of a 1500m climb. 30-40 mins in the van or 2-3 hours riding up ?

I'm starting to sound like the Majorca tourist board, but toni at tramuntbike in Majorca organises a 3 day trip along the tramuntana mountains in Majorca, you stay in hotels along the way. It was pretty good.

Www.tramuntbike.com and the trip is called la travessa

Alps crossing? Massively popular with adventurous Germans, so loads of info out there.
About 10 years ago we did Switzerland-Austria-Lichtenstein-Italy, iirc, stopping in lodgings each night (no camping for me!).
Fabulous experience.

How about something based on the route taken by the Top Gear team through Bolivia and over the Andes, taking a Viagra pill to help with the ascend? 😆

This is what you want if it's not just about downhill...

I love Majorca, might have to give that trip a try, trouble is we usually end up there July/August - I wouldn't fancy doing very much uphill that time of year!

Yeah you have to be mad to do la travessa in July/August. We did it at the end of October, the weather was perfect for it.

I'm hoping to do Majorca tramuntana in early November this year, provided the 2 people I'm supposed to be doing it with don't let me down. It's one thing talking about it, but actually booking it is something else.

After a couple of amazing Basque coast holidays with Doug at BasqueMTB, I shall be joining them later this year for their tour of the Pyrenees. That sounds right up your street.

Possibly a bit further afield than you're looking at, but looking at their website or seems like they'd do exactly what you're looking for: http://www.mtbtours.ro/en/
