Hoping to pack in my Sky subscription but still need pause/record and would like to maintain access to a bit of Sky1 programming (Modern Family, etc).
Would I be best off getting both a Humax box and a Now TV box or will just one of them fill my requirements?

Ahhh. And I presume no Humax box will do Now TV.
remember though all the shows are on catch up (trust me, my daughter is making her way through all 240 episodes of modern family)

The standard Now TV won't pause or record the live TV offering, but you can obviously pause the back catalogue of films and TV as you're just streaming it.
There is a new Now TV smart box, which does allow you to pause and rewind the live TV - this also has all the Freeview channels as well as the pay sky ones which are included in the entertainment package.

No you can't record NowTV, in 95% of cases, it just don't matter - it's broadcast live at 8pm, finishes at 9pm, at 9:01 it's available on demand without ads, why record it to watch later when you can stream it whenever you want.
The limitations are this:
Not all shows are available on demand due to their licensing agreement - The Simpson for example isn't.
They're not available forever 4-6 weeks after broadcast usually, however they do have 'boxsets' that are available for months, if not infinitely.
Before the 500gb Himax came down to about £100 (when they we're more like 250/300)... I very nice man on here said get a surplus BT youview box off of ebay for £50 ( they were surplus because something about BT sending them out even though customers were useing old sky+ boxes ... whatever)
I took his advise and 2 odd years later the BT box still work brilliantly (previous Himax boxes had given up the ghost by now) and its quieter, small and still half the price of a Himax box.

We have a couple of humax foxt2 hdr freeview boxes (one since they came out) - but that and the tv only support iplayer. Was looking for a streaming player (all4, nowtv/netflix etc) and settled on a Roku, 50 quid via a trial of amazon prime. There's wifi only and ethernet variants - wifi is a bit unreliable IME and esp. in our house (wall construction) so we have the latter. The nowtv box is also a roku but I *think* the wifi only variant (dunno about newer offerings). We've actually had a nowtv subscription for movies only running for several months after a free trial but are gonna suspend it for a few months or more, but it's been ok. Yeah, can subscribe to tv series too, plus there's amazon prime/Netflix. You *ought* to be able to do likewise with the nowtv box since it's also a roku, but it'd be worth checking (tho for a few extra quid I'd go wired..)
The Now Smart box can be Ethernet or wifi. I don't know about the standard Now box. It installs with some apps, and there is a selection of others to download. I've had one for a few weeks (still using another 2 week trial, for both entertainment and movies). Seems to give us all we want for much less than our previous Sky costs. Only thing is I'm having a bit of an issue with signal strength for the Freeview channels - I think we've an old outdoor aerial in the loft, so may need to consider a new, indoor, one.
And You can get Now vouchers via Amazon rather cheaper than going direct.
