Not putting the heating on - how's it going...?

Yeah, first night I’ve felt chilly out walking the dog and sorting the horse but absolutely no way the heating needs to go on yet. We only have a summer (4tog) quilt on all year around and I only wear a tee-shirt in bed on the very coldest nights in the depth of winter.

Edit: 18.6deg in the house - no need for heating yet.

Tado saved me a heap last year. I've never known an autumn last 12 months before! I'm going to try to hold out until Nov, but it all depends on the darling daughter. Work from home will be banned, get to work, it's more efficient to heat one building surely, especially as she can walk there.

Took the dog out for a walk yesterday evening about 7:30pm and had to break out my Autumn jacket for the first time since spring. Heating still not on and house sitting at 20 degrees Celsius. Still wearing shorts but t-shirt has been augmented with a hoodie. Definitely colder now that everyone else is back at work/school.

Edit: Also ordered my wellies for the winter dog walking season. Generally they seem to last one Autumn/Winter/Spring season.

Was definitely chilly on last nights ride,  and the heating had kicked in this morning at 17°. Talk of risk of frost in places this week, but I can remember frost in September not being that unusual on September 7am commutes pre Covid.

My wife's menopause and hot flushes has fully kicked this summer so no doubt our heating will be on - off - on - off - on - off for the next few years! And the windows flung open and closed on a regular basis!  🙂

Woke up this morning, looked out of the window, weather was shit and it looked cold and wet. Very nearly put trousers on, but had a word with myself and put shorts on. I am wearing a hoody though.

Working from home is still fine but going into the office might involve wearing jumper from now on....waterproofs for site will need to come out now as well... : -(

Mines been off since April sometimes but I have stuck it on two or 3 times just to circulate the system to try and eliminate any air locks. It will be on over the next couple of days as I need to flush the system as when I moved in last year the water in the system was black and I want to give it another clean out.

It's Kambarang here - end of the rains and starting to warm up. We're talking 20-28c over the next week so I'll be ditching my socks and just wearing me thongs. Noice!!!

Will really start warming up from end of Nov. Was looking at my solar stats for last year and was getting around 1MWh from Dec to March.

Heating not on yet, but it's in the post.  Me and MrsD both run pretty cold, and have sedentary jobs. It's 21.5C in the house today and I'm wearing a long-sleeved tee plus a lambswool jumper. MrsD is already on the winter duvet. I reckon in the next couple of weeks, unless the weather holds out...

Thermostat still said 20.5C this morning, it's set for 17.5.  I blooming love our new cavity wall insulation* ?

It's just about reached the time when I'll have to remember to close the conservatory door at night to keep the heat in the kitchen but it's still adding enough heat in the day that I can't see the heating coming on for at least another month.

Just double checking you mean flip flops rather than skimpy undies.

@the-muffin-man I know how you feel. We have to sleep with the window open all winter - I'm freezing cold and she's not under the duvet. Finally gone to the doctors to see if HRT works.....fingers crossed for a warm winter! Last night was the first night I felt chilly.

Heating still of though, wouldn't expect to put it on until October. No heating on and the house is currently a very pleasant 21.5 indoors and 14 outdoors (North Wales).

ours is 20 year old dust in the cavity and a couple of 'iffy' narrow cavities.
Therefore we a) cannot insulate 1/3 of the house or b) have to pay £6k to 'clean' the dust in the other 2/3 of the house, before paying for cavity wall insulation... grrr.

At least you've got cavities! I don't think they existed in the 1820s when my house was built.

My living room is down to 19.9c today with no heating... although I've still got the upstairs windows open.

I suspect I might need to put the upstairs windows on the semi-shut latch just to allow airflow soon.

I really need to put some fresh inhibitor into my CH system, and de-gunk my mag-filter as I've not touched it for a few years... it might be clean but I won't know until I look...  at which point I might aswell do the job anyway.

About a month a go, daughter came back from uni. I walked into an oppressive Turkish sauna of a living room. FERFHECKSAKE!

Sense of humour failure, heating turned back off, doors and windows thrown open. Not happy.

Anyway it's been safely off since - except for 5 mins today as Cadent have been renewing a gas main in our road, and had to come and re-check it all worked OK again after they'd had our gas off today.

Definitely holding out til Oct, hopefully Nov.

4 TOG duvet ? Naaah - we're still using just a thin throw- plenty.

Time is a weird metric to assess when your going to put on the heating.

Surely temperature would be a better metric to make such judgement.

Akin to measuring when to service your car based on the number of coffees consumed by the driver

Long trousers back on for work today but wood stores are full which is good as my super cheap tariff expired last week.

I only want to spend the extra £15-20 per month that I spend on heating for a maximum of 3-4 months per year hence trying to leave it off until December 🙂

Hoping for similar prices as last winter

Been bloody freezing here, heating's off but the little heater's often on in the living room blasting 400w of goodness directly at me from 2 feet. Room stays cold, feets get warm.

Still off here in the midlands, and still in shorts as well, albeit with a hoody and a gilet for the morning walk. There's an argument that it was a touch cold for the flip-flops I wore to walk the dog, but not by much.

On my scale we're definitely into "put a jumper on", and "put some socks on" will come next. That still leaves "put some trousers on", "put a thicker jumper on" and "lets cuddle under the blanket on the sofa" before we resort to the heating.

Anyone used infra red heating panels.. Are they cost efficient.. I think one could work for me at my desk without putting the heating on until later in the year...

I have 2 far infrared panels. 700w each. I reckon a 700w fan/convention heater would be better under a desk.

The panels do create heat and are silent in operation. I bought the WiFi connected option so I can control them remotely. Cost £90 each so they'll never pay themselves off.

A cheap £10/15 convection heater with a 750w setting with a tapo smart plug would be my choice if I was buying at this moment in time.

Plus the Agile tariff from octopus.

I haven't used a modern infrared panel but I've always used oldschool ir heaters for the garage- they're pretty bad at heating a space, but they're brilliant at heating a thing (in this case, me) SO you can be warm in a cold room. Brilliant in a room that's hard to heat- too big, too draughty, lacking insulation- but can also just be really efficient, and good for a quick boost.

Very tempted to get a modern one to stick under my desk, not for fulltime but for those moments where I'm just a wee bit chilly and it'll take ages to fix it with the real heating

Not warranted putting heating on here in East of Scotland, but my wife is a fan of the electric blanket and puts it on most nights throughout the year. Like in high summer (not necessarily this year) puts it on, gets into bed, turns it off, falls asleep then 5min later has kicked all of the covers off ?.

Still 21 degrees in the house here in North Somerset sans heating.

A bit chilly this evening so I closed the down stairs trickle vents for overnight. Bedroom windows will remain at least partially open year round.

There's a chance the stat will strike up the heating for a bit at 06:00 tomorrow morning, but it'll need to bottom out 18 indoors to do that.

We're a 'put a jumper on' kinda family.

Well the heating just kicked in. I put new batteries in the thermostat, just to make sure it was working, better to know now rather than a proper cold day. I was surprised when it clicked on. Was set at 19c.
It shut off after about a half hour, the house is pretty well insulated.

No heating still but we have just put the duvet back on the bed. I'm not laying under it at the moment though, we'll see if I wake up under it tomorrow morning....

I heard mine kick in at somewhere around 8 this morning. It’s supposed to be a bit colder tonight around 8°, so I guess it’s going to fire up tomorrow morning as well. It only came on for about half an hour, so just enough to warm the air a bit.

@dufresneorama I'm a huge fan of the electric blanket, I intentionally get cold before I go to bed so when I climb in it's like jumping in the toaster. Just lovely.
