Apropos to nothing, im finally going to rise to it:

When a news article or indeed anything says:

Paul Norris [not his real name].....

Can someone tell me why they need to give him a name at all?

I can understand putting "not his real name", in case actual Paul Norris, gets it in the neck for something some nameless bloke has done, but why give the subject a fictitious name at all?

Just put:

  • The customer
  • The complainant
  • the vicitm

or whatever is suitable. They dont need a pseudonym, pressumably with a backstory and fake passport.

If anything its supicious. What is this guys name? We dont know, but its not Paul Norris!

Seems like something Paul Norris might say

I suppose it makes easier reading and adds a bit of humanity to a sex toy and blood story. Obviously the temptation is to throw in a silly pun fake name.

It would get very confusing on here if we didn’t call ourselves something, I’d have to be known as “no paragraphs narrowboat man” or “random rubbish observations bloke”, or occasionally as”nothing useful to contribute fella”…

I would imagine that for some people, not providing a name dehumanises the person, so a random name is given instead.

It could be a double bluff, and Paul Norris is his real name.

Could Joe Cocker be using it as a pseudonym?

I'd not heard of Vrbo before - sure as hell won't be using them when I want to book somewhere to stay!

Well, over the roughly 20 years I’ve been on here, I can’t remember any member who actually used their given name. My surname isn’t actually Zero, and I’m most definitely not a Count. Or anything with a vaguely similar spelling…
