I'll be flying into Venice and picking up a hire car and then heading into Slovenia and Croatia. I'll quickly head as far south as Dubrovnik then slowly work my way north again along Croatian coast, then Slovenia (eg Triglav) then back to Venice to drop car off
So...anyone know whether there are any motorway vignette or ULEZ type requirements I need to know about . And if so, any way to mitigate cost/hassle by getting it sorted in advance?
Croatia has toll Mororways, pay at barrier, nice and simple.
Slovenia has a vignette, go online once you know the hire car details and you can pay for a few days/week/2 weeks iirc. Took me 5 mins in the airport, you’ll get a text message almost instantly to confirm the details and you’re good to go.
2 lane motorways in both, variable speed limits 80-130kmph, HGV’s can’t overtake during daytime busy periods.
So much more pleasant than driving in the UK.
Can’t help with Italy sorry.
Thanks - good to know.
I'm hoping any rental car picked up in Italy will have an appropriate vignette for Italy already ... Optimistic?!!?
Italy doesn't need a vignette, but does have toll motorways. They can be funny with cards, but they also take cash. Depending on your route back through Slovenia you might not even need the vignette but I honestly can't remember. For the sake of a few Euro I'd just get one. First petrol station over the border, or the penultimate one before. All those countries are in Schengen now, so the border posts are unmanned now. Glad I got a car stamp before they disappeared, tbh.
It's a lovely part of the world, enjoy!
Only bit I don't know about is the twenty or so kilometres of Bosnia that splits the Croatian coast. If there's a ferry across to the Kavtat peninsula that could save you hassle. Worth looking in to that...
Just checked, as I was curious. They've built a bridge bypassing Bosnia now. There is a ferry further north, though. And Korčula now is probably what Dubrovnik and Rovinj were ten years ago.
Yep, went over the bridge heading north from Dubrovnik a couple of years back.
Thanks. A quick look on Google maps suggests there isn't a ferry involved if using the E55/E70/E61/E65 routes but tolls are involved. Google, unfortunately, does calculate the tolls or how to pay...more research needed.
I'm hoping I don't need to buy Euros at the airport!
Don't skip the Slovenia e-vignette. The cameras on the highway check plates and if you have paid. Its a hefty fine of €150 as I know to my cost. Just get one online.
