Spent the last few years holidaying with in north wales, great beaches, trails mountains etc. The missus fancies a change and as we have never been to scotland i am looking for advice on where to go in august with wife, 16 and 9 yr olds. Open minded as to where, but need beaches, biking and a village with a good pub. Any suggestions

West coast rules for scenery.

Galloway, Glentrool - near England, scenery, biking, beaches

N Coast Tongue - Dunnet Head, remote, limited facilities, fantsstic quiet beaches (some cycling inland but limited)

Skyeish - awesome,

Can camp at Applecross beach (or hotel + outdoor centre) - pub, beach, biking (see MBR a couple of months ago)

Note that **teenager** facilities can be very limited in Scotland, esp rural areas.

Thanks for that. Thankfully sulky teenager does bike/walk and we have the option to leave it at home. Do you know the name of the hotel on Skye perchance, wife won't do camping so it would have to be cottage/hotel

Scotland in August?

One word: Midges.

Pray for wind, lots of wind!

I'd maybe suggest two (or more) places in a week (mainly as places there are small, limited facilities and so variety might help).

We stayed here http://www.ruareidh.co.uk/ lighthouse (very remote - treat for gf and my dad was a lighthouse keeper) - pretty good. Poss cycle round headland .......

Garvault hotel (most remote in Scotland - probably) generator power, deer in garden, one bike route but not on beaches. (basic, but brilliant experience)

Plockton - Haven hotel I think (okish)

KinlochBervie hotel (..... mmmm)

Coast road from Applecross to Torridon (in balzing sun to be fair) is the BEST I have ever seen (and I've done Britain) well worth a drive

Would suggest booking if near BH.

Just internet for accom we did.

Beaches? Not a big thing on Skye
Biking? Not a lot of choice and what there is pretty "committed"

I always say this, but you really can't go wrong with Aviemore and area. You have miles and miles of bike routes - of all standards, the beaches on the Moray Firth are less than an hour way and you have a wide range of other activities on your doorstep. And I can recommend the Cairngorm Hotel.

Thanks gents (or gentesses), food for thought. From what you say a bit of a tour of the west coast sounds good.
