Let the panic buying commence....
My local producer has lots lined up already and the farmer is breeding more for them. Sounds like it's cheap Supermarket rubbish that'll be effected.
*Stockpiles some of the good stuff....*
What is the best way to stockpile bacon? 😉
In your belly.
Looks like time to become a veggie then
Oh well
Eat British! I know we won't be immune from the shortage but we have much higher piggy welfare standards here in the UK than elsewhere so always make sure your piggy is local.
+1 for buy British. Preferably from you butcher. Danish pig welfare is shocking
Have you tried the Aldi stuff?
Thick cut, not too salty, British & not full of water.
Almost as good as the stuff from the farm shop and wonderful in an emergency.
And another vote for local pigs for local people.

+Many, many millions.
If you have a decent butcher, use them. If not, use a shop with good standards (Waitrose win that one in my eyes)
Better to have no meat than bad meat.
If you don't have a decent butcher find one or look for a farm shop, never use a supermarket no matter how posh you think it is. It's the supermarkets under paying their suppliers that's causing the issues.

That and heavy pork imports that do not comply to our UK welfare standards.

Be aware that "British made" does not always equal "Grown in Britain". Particularly true in sausages, where the meat can be derived from anywhere, so long as the sausage is made in the UK.
Ask your butcher where the meat is from. I go to butcher across the road from my house. He sells beef made from the cows I can see behind my house.
Time to grow your own pig I think 😉
Well we have had a shocking time on the farm with our cattle and sheep(s). It's rained so damn hard and long this summer that they've been in most of the year, well no that aint true but at least 33% of the year and thats a lot... We're feeding them on bails instead of propers grass like and we're an Organic Farm an all that.
Not suprised theres a shortage, we're finding it hard to look after 45heads and 110 sheeps like.
Terrible, truely terrible year.
And now the Beck's all flooded and that'll mean the lower 3 fields are out of bounds for at least a month, a month provided the rain stops.. which seems unlikely at the moment.
Oh the farms uooop North like.. not far from Stainburn, lucky me.
SO you'll not be suprised to hear me say Eat Local will you.
ski - MemberTime to grow your own pig I think
I know a few folk who've reared their own pigs and lambs...when chop time came, they'd grown too attached and ended up keeping them as pets! Cost them a fortune in vets bills.
I've seen a few Blue pigs on here . What do they taste like ?
Keeping cattle ain't for the faint of heart that's for sure.
Butchering your pet can become a little tearful, certainly if you have kids, then feed the kids with "babe".
The upshot is you get a full freezer, the downside is your kids will hate you foreverlike.
Tastes a lot like human flesh, apparently...

I agree.
I used to have a pet cow!
Well it was a orphan calf I rescued from a farm I used to work on & it was a nightmare, tame livestock are a dangerous thing to have on a farm, especially when they think they are the boss!
Pet livestock not a funny game, not recomended.
But we are talking pork here, I think the smell of decent bacon could make me consider doing it all over again 😉
I know a few folk who've reared their own pigs and lambs...when chop time came, they'd grown too attached
my sister-in-law and her family raised a porker, they avoided the kids getting too attached by naming it after a neighbour that the kids (6 and 4) don't like.. 😯
I guess it depends on your kids attitudes as to whether raising animals for meat is your thing or not..
Tucking into big delicious slices of Raquel at the Xmas dinner table raised smiles all round though
The upshot is you get a full freezer, the downside is your kids will hate you foreverlike.
There were never any objections from me!!
Brought up with reality and a heart of stone 🙂
Is that a Regatta Splosh suit there Yunki? A particularly fine garment for throwing one's little 'uns outside in all weathers (and thus getting some respite) 🙂
I thought the rising meat costs were caused by a global spike in feed prices which was leading to stock slaughtering-particularly effects pigs as they are quicker to replace.
