I have a Ryobi chainsaw and had trouble starting it up. i removed the pull start and tried to use a drill to start it (this has worked in the past)

I removed the spark plug and put it against the head and i can some times see a faint spark (did see a real good one once) the other times i get sweet FA. any hints and tips? (have looked on a few forums and a options are a new ignition module.) I have tried the screwdriver in the HT lead trick to see if its the plug? and still no spark.

any other ideas? how far away should the module be from the magnet?

any help would be great!

Can't help, but there's a user called spudulike on arbtalk that would probably be able to help

often the coil gets knocked and end's up being too far from the contact point and doesn't create a strong enough spark (if any!).

* they sometimes just just so rub on the comm, and so the material wears and then the distance becomes too great for a spark to be generated. Get your feeler gauges out and get gapping!

Indeed your coil gap will matter greatly, though on all of the engines ive stripped* there wasn't enough play in the mounting bolts to allow enough movement to stop the spark.

*Only 4 or 5.

all sorted! took me 3 hours, im not to sure what was wrong but its working now.

i stripped it down and clean every thing. i think the last person to use it did not add any 2 stroke oil to the fuel as it was very very dry in there and the piston needed knocking out with a drift.
