MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Anyone getting this on Wednesday/Friday?
Will it live up to the hype or be an unmitigated disaster?
I think all the mystery surrounding the game has whipped up such hype that it can't possibly be as good as we're lead to believe.
Personally though, I can't wait to find out 🙂
There's definitely a lot of excitement about it! It'll be interesting to see how it pans out
Was hoping mine would arrive today but apparently not, tomorrow then but post will be late.
I really like the idea of this, but I'm too scared to buy it in case the reality is a million miles from the expectation.
The potential here is enormous, however the potential to bollix it right up is equally vast.
bells and whistles - it'll be boring after a week ..
not sure how a non persistent MMO is going to be, will see what happens with consul release then consider PC purchase
I was going to steer clear, as like a bit of narrative (last of us)/action (bloodborne) in my games. But currently got naff all to play so might take a punt if I can get it for a decent price.
Anyone bunking off to play this then? I'm still on the fence about buying it myself. Rarely buy on day 1, but am pretty tempted.

Same.
Am resisting as Mrs Dubleyou might buy it for my birthday in a month.
Hmm. It appears I am invited to an eBay promotion where I get 20x nectar points, so nearly a tenner off if I bought NMS off there.
Resolve......failing....
If anyone here does take the plunge, please post a short review.
I'm still worried it's going to be Spore all over again. Early reviews suggest it's a bit meh with the inventory/crafting stuff.
Jim Sterling has a decent take on it.
By the end of the month Game will have a stockpile of preowned copies - I'd say it's got around 10 hrs worth of fun maximum ..
Ars Technica just did a preview writeup. May be of interest...
I think IGN's take on it is pretty much aligned to my expectation.
Looks beautiful but does little to float my bkat.
Like the idea, just can't imagine it actual has much depth after you've played it for a few hours.
I played it last night when it came out in the uk. Got to bed at 4am.
I really like it. It makes you feel very, very small in a giant universe. Which sounds a bit shit I know. The exploration is lovely, the lack of a linear path and any real instructions makes you feel completely alone. Which is very different and very appealing. Particularly once you get the hang of creating items and interacting with the various races who inhabit your corner the confidence to warp into new solar systems and explore new worlds is palpable.
My personal experience is that the planets on the very edge where you begin are pretty barren and things start to get more interesting the more you learn and interact
My two kids love it, LOVE IT. I'd not really thought it was their kind of thing but they are away! Dogfighting against pirates, bartering with moody aliens, discovering and naming new life forms and skimming across planets to find relics etc is just the beginning. It's complete hugeness, uniqueness and feeling of genuine adventure is something I've never experienced before in a game.
Looks great, not sure that it will keep the longer term appeal that Elite Dangerous has had with me.
Think kids will get hooked on it though, as it's looks like one of those games that get's better the more imaginative you are.
Personally, if Star Citizen ever makes it to full release then it's going to be amazeballs.
JJ Abrams will have nothing on it - it's just a shame that it won't be set in the Star Wars universe. A Star Destroyer floating over that world would just be.....something special.
I'm interested in the tech but it looks pretty lacking in meaningful things to do... Eve Online is the same, the basic game is just a place for the human interactions to happen, but this doesn't really feel like it has the mechanisms for people to fill it up like they have in Eve.
What really surprised me is how bad the graphics are. I don't mean the looks themselves; I mean the pop-up, the horrible texture changes, light sources appearing and disappearing as you move around... It still looks like an early tech demo, or some ancient 3D game- the texture pop-in reminds me of mechwarrior 2 😆 For a game with so much movement, that's pretty pathetic, flying over the planets should look and feel awesome but there's a horrible combination of long draw distances and far-too-short detail draw...
Can I mention again how excited I'm getting by Star Citizen - the 2.5 alpha has really come along, 2.7 and we will really start seeing what it will be like - with procedural planets and a full system to explore.
Its going to be amazing with the big ships that you can walk around with your friends/family and explore the universe together.
What I love, is that if all pays off - it's going to bring a simulator like feel, with story line, a huuuge world, good combat, trade, exploration and stunning graphics - and it's just going to be awesome when it comes to the "suspension of disbelief" - you have this real feeling of actually being a pilot and owning your own ship. No mans sky just looks like it won't do that - arcadey feel, poor graphics, poor gameplay and no story line to rope you in.

Sorry, but that's bollocks. The real truth is that no-one knows the stories yet and actually the gameplay matches the feel of the game. I like a good sim as much as the next nerd. I also like stepping into the pages of a 1950s technicolour sci fi comic and exploring something so vast I know that I'll only ever see my own reflection.
Do you think it's worth trying if you already own Elite Dangerous Yossarian? Is there any actual kind of storyline? Does it have a living, breathing economy? Or is it Spore in space, with guns?
It's neither as far as I can see with limited knowledge.
Storyline? Yes, many. I don't know what most of them are yet but I've uncovered hints of many things that clearly continue.
Economy? Yes, there is an economy across the universe and many independent traders trying to fix a deal for themselves.
Tell you what actually, the best thing so far is usually the worst thing. The grind. I need another 20 units of zinc to make a warp cell to let me blast out of this solar system. The space station and the planetary trading post aren't playing ball, nor are any of the other pilots who are landing, selling their shit and taking off again. So I'll have to go walkabout on the planet to find it. I know know where to find zinc (I'm learning!), so off I toddle to grind out the resource. Only this is a totally unique planet that I discovered half an hour ago (it's named after one of my kids) and on the way to find the zinc I discover half a dozen new species of animal, a proper **** of a giant plant that stings me when I get close to it, a weird alien monolith that vibrates some kind of message to me and then get lost in a massive cave system with all kinds of bioluminescent flaura and fauna. Zinc. Oh yeah the zinc. Now I like this. I like being distracted. Not in a grand theft auto nihilistic style, but genuinely getting sidetracked by things that you know are completely unique to this world.
Does Elite or Spore do this? If not, then no, it's not the same.
Are any of these DX12?
Eve is about your alliance and corp, player driven plus loads to do but its a serious sand box game. Difficult to get into. In a good corp or alliance its pretty amazing
So, I was home alone last night and bit the bullet.
Played for 4 hours, had similar experience to Yossarian (almost exactly with the zinc).
Have done a couple of warp jumps and can make my own Antimatter / Warp fuel.
Have spent some time finding monoliths, learning words and fighting sentinels - it feels very much like Elite (never played dangerous). I'm not sure if it's going to hold me yet...
After watching a couple of reviewers and twitch streams, I am holding off for the time being. Doesn't look like it would hold me....certainly not 'complete 4x back to back Bloodborne GOTY' hold me.
Honestly, looks like an indie game Sony decided to market, and price, as a AAA game. I reckon it will be £30 within a few months.
So, I was left alone with my Steam account and my wallet last night so I've bought NMS. I've seven hours of work to get through, then I get to go home, download and play.
Any further updates or impressions?
I hear the PC version is a buggy mess akin to the latest Batman.
If my experiences are anything to go by, I didn't encounter any bugs at all. Everything ran smoothly, but I'm not happy with the rendering and draw distances, given that I've a 6GB graphics card. There's further optimization to be found there, for sure.
It really is a thing of beauty though. There's enough to do to get you started, rebuilding your ship teaches you how to mine resources and how to prioritize carrying stuff. Mrs and I played for about five hours in total last night and came away impressed.
In many ways, it's very reminiscent of Frontier on the 16 bit platforms. You have the same license to explore, land anywhere you like and visit places in vibrant colour.
It seems Sony, Amazon, Steam etc are now issuing refunds due to promised features not actually being in the game.
Also, it looks like the userbase has fallen off a cliff on PC.

so 18 Quintillion planets turns out to be more like 255, then there is the whole "getting to the center of the universe" thing that Reddit are going all mad about.
This was the game that was going to be the reason I purchased a PS4, i'm glad I waited.
Shame really because when the first trailers were released it looked the nuts, now it appears the developers could not deliver on their claims.
Just ordered this on a whim. Anyone feel differently now you've had a while to play it?
I've not played it for a few weeks mainly because of work but also Battlefield 1 Beta came out and an upgrade for Star Wars Battlefront.
an upgrade for Star Wars Battlefront.
Now there's a game that's failed to deliver. With the exception of the Bespin update it's been massively disappointing and the new Death Star stuff is just a bit meh 🙁
Are you playing a different game to me?
It's great fun multiplayer

Nope, multiplayer. The smaller games are better but I had big hopes for Walker Assault and the other big battle but it's very underwhelming.
Hmmm! I'm enjoying them but yeah the small maps are much more fun.

The Bespin map update was brilliant and I would have liked to have had the "escort" mission on that. The Death Star stuff seems like a missed opportunity too and I hate the one where you're attacking the star destroyer
Anyway....
No man's sky?
Kept my interest until I maxed out my ship/suit/multitool
Then it all seemed the same old same old
Went back to Witcher 3 and preordered Skyrim Remaster
