Anybody with experience of using this type of adapter, I like to use a 500mm Mirror lens with a m42 thread.

Should not be an issue - Nikon have always had the same mount so there should be no confusion as to what to buy.
You'll be working on fully manual exposure and focussing but I'm guessing you already know that?
