Just listened to him on 5 Live about his rage and disgust that MPs won't be able to claim for 1st class rail travel any more.

Anyone who thinks that the Tory party are the part of the people really needs to listen to this.

As is happens, I'd rather not see any MP travelling first class anywhere unless they pay for it themselves!

One of the most amazing radio interviews I have ever heard.

I would think Conservative central office are going into meltdown at this.

I am obviously one of the different kind of people he mentions.

What a total prat!

I don't have a problem them travelling 1st class on the train, I do whether its company paid or paying myself.

Lets focus on the real issues - the economy and the state of the nation!

Yeah I heard that interview and I suspect there were a lot of MPs cringing as they listened. Fortunately (hopefully) he's among the last of a dying breed of old-school farts coming to the end of their career in politics. Not sure it's fair to tar the whole tory party as sharing his views though...I suspect Cameron will be ripping him a new one soon if he hasn't already.

The Torys can never be a part for the people as thats not what being a tory is about. It like saying that a socialist should support a class based society 🙂

yeah he and his wife are standing down,

at least they get a 60k pay off (each) to help them adjust to a normal life and a 30k one the year after to ease them in gently

People in 2nd class are just visiting friends or sightseeing, whereas I have a job to do.
Bless.

I've never made any secret of my utter contempt for Prescott.

When I travel on any lengthy rail journey (Eg: Paddington-Chepstow), I always book ahead so I can get a seat in the "Quiet" carriage, I can't stand having to put up with people on mobiles, over-loud MP3 players, drunk football fans, ticket jumpers, irritating noisy kids and so on.

If I had the means, I'd go first class every time.

If I had to work whilst travelling, absolutely I'd go first class.

If what Winterton said here:> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8521510.stm

is what he said on the radio well, to be honest, I think I agree with him.

Whatever his politics.

Pesumably your company would re-imburse you. I've worked for companies who wouldn't.

Well fair enough you might WANT to travel first class, but why should WE have to pay for it?

I think they should get rid of first class anyway

If any MP has the common sense to do what I do, book a ticket in advance so that 1st class works out cheaper than the regular fare, then that should be applauded. In terms of expenses the fees office should probably be much more concerned about MPs who pay the walk up price for any train fare when they could have paid half by getting the ticket the day before...

I'm lucky enough to get paid to travel 1st class. My daily rate means that I save the tax payer money by being able to work on the train. If I couldn't [s]waste my time on stw[/s] work on the train, I'd be getting paid to just sit on my arris.
