Hi,

A colleague is leaving for a new post, and after a whip-round we have a decent amount of money. The best idea we have is a nice pen (he appreciates such things) so I wondered if anybody can tell me which brands/models are desireable? We may also have it engraved.

Parker??

I'll have a look, I know nothing beyond a basic Parker pen! Thanks 🙂

Lamy are decent, even the basic Safari is a nice pen. Beyond that I suspect Parker is a bit like Raleigh bikes.

Nip down to John Lewis and speak to the nice man behind the counter would be my first port of call...

Like a fountain pen looks wise, but writes more like a modern design.
I've just picked one up and its brilliant.
But then the only thing I like writing with is one of those hi Techpoint things normally.

I was going to suggest Mont Blanc but the website has crappy music. I'm withdrawing my recommendation of Mont Blanc until they get rid of said crappy muzak!!!

But who uses a fountain pen these days?

Me, my current favourite is a Waterman freebie from Alfa Laval S.A.

Mont Blanc - there's plenty from about £100 up, in a selection of fountain, ballpoint, biro etc. They are quite obvious as Mont Blanc, if that's a good or bad thing.

The missus bought me a Cross pen a couple of years ago, polished stainless steel, and I actually prefer that. It's a bit more understated, but still classy, and I use it all the time.

Good idea, too.

One of the pricier Lamys would be a nice gift - they all write really well from the cheapo safari upwards but as it's a gift you need the bling factor.

Also a fan of Pilot myself, but they (obviously) use Japanese nib sizing so can be a little thin/fine for some people.

Depends on your budget.

But when my dad retired he was given a Montblanc Meisterstück Platinum Line Classique, and it's stunning.
I love using it, even though I haven't written with a fountain pen regularly for years.

It's the quality that makes it seem easer to write with than a modern rollerball type pen.

If you have enough in the pot, they won't be disappointed with one I can assure you !

For purchasing - www.cultpens.com are good. I've not bought anything exotic from them, but for regular orders they tend to take about an hour from receiving the to dispatching the goods.

Given a Laban 925 rollerball recently - solid silver, not too pricey and looks good in an understated way.

A pen? A Blummin pen? Why not just punch him in the face?
How about getting something which doesn't scream, 'i couldn't give a toss about you'....
But of course, if he likes.......pens...

We've got quite a few Mont Blanc's, nice pens, you could always look at Du pont, as that would probably be my choice if I was buying another.

Mont Blanc rollerball or ballpoint (they are interchangeable). I'd be pretty chuffed to take one to my next post. The starwalker is rather nice.

Mont Blanc still speaks of "I'm successful don't you know", though the 146 is very nice.

Lamy 2000 is fab but prices have just rocketed. I have one on order for much cheapness (from WH Smith, though they're out of stock).

Mont Blanc? But who uses a fountain pen these days?

Me. Every day. Top one is a Dunhill Sidecar Chassis. Love it.

I think poor whsmith dont know what hit em! I have four Lamy pens on order with them, and from a search of forums it appears that every pen enthusiast in the Uk has deluged them with Lamy 2000 orders!
The Lamy studio is an absolute steal for £20. Both mrs hb and myself have one as our everyday pens and constantly get comments on how nice they look. Yestererday I used mine to get an autograph from Ade Edmondson....hero!

kayak, yes i know its wierd. I have heard a few sick folk are even football enthusiasts and buy ovrsize tops with the names of famous players on to wear while they stand in pubs shouting at a plasma screen. Nowt so queer as folk.

Pen enthusiast you say?

And that's just the fountain pens, got bigger 'collections' of ballpoint/rollerball and mechanical pencils.

(In a slight defence, I do teach Art and Graphics for a living)

Coming to this late, but with a vital piece of info;

Mont Blanc = Poseurs pen. Hateful things.

I'd either go for something classic like a Cross Townsend, a Pelikan, or vintage like a Parker 51. If you're feeling flush, a lacquered Conway Stewart.

For vintage this is my fave shop;

That's what the Russians used... 😀

That's what the Russians used...

As did the Americans.

Until they both realised snapped lead floating around shorting out electrics and getting into places it wasn't welcome wasn't a good idea.

The spacepen was developed by Fisher but had nothing to do with NASA originally. Once it was on the market both the Americans and Russians adopted its use on spaceflights instead of pencils.
