We will be in touch
Purhased a new 322GW and fitted over the weekend, but it keeps freezing up. Troubleshooting is pointing towards the memory card being the culprit, and I've tried a couple but both are fairly old.
Have I got to purchase the primo Nextbase one, or will any decent modern card do? I've ordered a SanDisk Ultra class 10 128GB but now pondering if I should have just gone with the OEM one.
Nextbase will always default to blaming 3rd party cards. I've used SanDisk before, extreme duty or similar. The card certainly takes a spanking, but I find it hard to believe the nextbase branded one is anything other than a rebranding card from a bugger player.
There will be nothing 'special' about an OEM card. You've made the right purchase IMHO.

Oh absolutely, but there appear to be a lot of different specification levels. Anyway, you and Cougar have convinced me to at least try the one I ordered rather than just return it unopened. Ta.
I have a Nextbase camera and it all works well - however the initial setting up was a bit of a pain as I remember. Do you have the most up to date software installed on it?
I can't quite remember as it was a while ago, but I do remember it being a right dick, but once it sorted itself out it's been fine
From my receipt it looks like I got
SanDisk 256GB High Endurance Micro SD (SDXC) Card U3, V30, 100MB/s R, 40MB/s W
From memory cow for less than £30

A high spec sandisk one will be fine..
Dashcam manufacturers recommend their own as is its easier than trying to explain to a customer all the different types of ad card...
Dashcams are quite a different usage case to say an ad card in a camera... As the card is constantly being written to and overwritten when full, so as usage cases go, it's quite a stressful life for an ad card.
Do you have the most up to date software installed on it?
Yes, I did that and it was indeed a bit of a dick, as you say. Once I've got it sorted I'm quite hopeful it'll be good. I certainly like the neat mount with the magnetic attachment.

I don't believe their card is anything special, however IMHO you should return it and get the overpriced Nextbase card, otherwise their support will not help you when you (inevitably) have problems later.

Manufacturers recommend their own as it's more money for them. It's known as "value added." They don't make much money from the base product, rather they make money from the extra crap they can bundle with it.
Hmm.. I'd bet the nextbase branded card is just a high endurance sandisk card with the nextbase logo printed on it.
But yes they are a little bit more expensive than a high endurance sandisk card, because of course they will be.
Nextbase card direct from nextbase ..128gb £55
High endurance sandisk card 128gb direct from sandisk:
£43
@op..
You didn't specify if you've tried a nextbase branded card... The Dashcam should have one included as part of the purchase... You've only mentioned you've tried 2 'old cards' of unknown spec and usage history.
Format the card in the camera. Occasionally clear any retained clips caused by potholes, etc, the camera will only support a certain retained % of capacity.
Any decent card to the spec below, some cameras won't support a larger capacity card.
Spec for NBDVR322GW
MicroSD, Class 10, up to 128GB
8-128GB SDHC / SDXC, U3, Class 10 (48mb/s)
For best results, use a Nextbase branded SD card
Format the card in the camera.
Good point..They do specify you should format the SD card *once a fortnight*, depending on how much it's used (read how much you drive)-
I think people need to realise that SD cards in dash cams get absolutley hammered with continuous writes all the time, so as SD cards go, its a highly stressful usage case in terms of endurance.

Well I thought I implied not and no, it didn't come bundled with one.
I've formatted both the ones I tried through the camera menu.

Ideally format the card with this tool:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/
It is the official SD Association tool which will correctly align the partitions for maximum performance. The device may or may not get it right, the app above definitely will.
Formatting the card every two weeks is plainly stupid, only necessary because Nextbase devices corrupt the filesystem regularly.

That shouldn't be nessesary..you can just do a quick format with the card in the camera device via its menu screen system.
One thing to note, is that some models, or at least mine, will store video all the time, and that will be overwriten in due course with fresh video, but will also save some video in 'protected storage'
And that protected storage can build up, unless you specifically delete it, and so it will essentailly reduce the capacity of the card over time if lots of 'protected' files build up.
Formatting the card every two weeks is plainly stupid,
Excessive, maybe, but not stupid - you have to remember that most people buying these devices don't have a clue how flash storage actually works... when all you have to do is 'RTFM'.
So (IMO) they (nextbase) just say that to make it 'idiot proof', so some Karen can't get all bent out of shape about it because they don't know how to operate the device when it enevitably hasn't worked (possibly for some months) when they most need it.
....and you can format the card via the device touch screen in about 10 seconds.
You have to do a seperate operation to delete the protected files, which takes about another 10 seconds.

It's 'kinda sus' that it didn't come with at least a 32gb card- where did you buy it from? was it second hand?
Anyway - In that case, the new sandisk card you ordered should be OK, you can't just throw any old second hand/ali express card in them and expect them to work well, as the market is awash with fakes, you have to buy from a known good supplier.
It appears youv'e purchased one of these:
But really should have purchased one of these:
But suck it and see, assuming it's not a fake, it's probs fine....

Yes you would hope so, but it's not the case.
You can often get 20-50% extra write performance on a card for free, just by formatting it with the tool I recommended.

That's not why they say that, it's because the filesystem gets corrupted which causes the device to freeze. I've had it confirmed by Nextbase support and it says something similar on their wiki.
When you're driving along and you notice that despite the fact the screen is still moving, the red light is frozen it's 9/10 times because of this corruption.
Also why buy from some random site - "memory cow?" WTF is that?
Just buy direct from sandisk or western digital in future!

Seems you are right though, that particular model does not come with an SD card:

be a gent and post a Link, if you want me to take you seriously, eh?

Because it was a genuine card for less money.
You seem very angry, do you need a hug?
It's a valid concern, counterfeit cards are rife. But I looked up the domain name, they've been going since 2008 so unlikely to be dodgy.
The domain name expires today, mind. 😁

lol I'm not sure why looking up the information is on me but here you go
What will happen if I don't format my SD card?
If you fail to format your SD card for a prolonged period of time you could experience the following types of issues:
SD card error messages
Recording failure
Automatic recording failure
Frozen screen
Gaps between recordings
Corrupted or unplayable files
Failure to start-up and shutdown
Inoperable buttons

If you fail to format your SD card for a prolonged period of time you could experience the following types of issues:
I would file that under "well, your device is broken garbage then."
I would file that under "well, your device is broken garbage then."
Totally agree.
As a coder that's written and debugged filesystems in the past (embedded linux dev), the list of symptoms and their formatting recommendation smacks of "we know something randomly goes wrong and corrupts the card, but no clue what, so just tell the customer to format it every two weeks and hopefully they won't notice".
I have the Nextbase 422GW and bought a SanDisk Extreme 128Gb MicroSD XC V30 U3 A2 and it works fine.
Right, the SanDisk card gave errors from the off, said it wasn't class 10 so that was rubbish, maybe a fake. I've got a proper Nextbase one, actually not mad expensive with a discount and free postage and it seems stable for recording now, but is a still a bit freezy when linked by WiFi to the phone app. TBH, if I need to move files off it, I will probably just put the memory card into a computer.
